How to use Statcounter on My Space - The Solution

My Space does not permit using code such as Statcounter. Not even the html-only version can be used.

However Avantartist has found a smart workaround this. It involves using the counter image as the background of a dummy div placed in the About Me section.

You cannot place the entire code that is generated by Statcounter's wizard. This is a special case where you only take the link given in the src from the <img > tag and turn it into a background image for a <div..>, defined as an inline style definition.

Place this code in the About me section of your page and the your own header HTML section on the blog customize page and it works just fine.

It will log the way an html-only counter would log: all info except for page url referer url, page title and screen resolution, all of which can only be obtained through javascript. This means the Came from, Popular pages and other similar url-based stats will be empty. But you will get your visitor's IP and geo-location, OS and browser information by and large.

The actual syntax for this should be:

Quote:

<div style="background-image:url(http://c9.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=999999&amp;java=0&amp;invisible=1&amp;security=zzzzzzz); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center; width:1px; height:1px;"></div>

Set invisible=0 and width:60px; height:14px; if you want to actually see the counter being displayed as well - assuming the counter is configured to be visible in the first place.

The fields in red depend on your particular project code.

Link?

You have to follow ALL instructions carefully!

If you want to be helped you have to help yourself too.

And stop using such silly language as what you are using. If you are younger than 13 you should have had parental permission. If you are older than 13 you don't sound it. Mad

That works beautifully!

Now, How about my blog?

I had the html version on my blog, it didn't allow me to work on my blog.

Cross your fingers and wish me luck!

Well that seems to work also. But...I can't tell which pages are opened.
I guess that you can't have everything.

I followed the instructions perfectly, but for some reason, the code isn't working on my Myspace.
Is there any other way of explaining it to me?
thank you so much

Sorry, I really don't see how else to explain it.

You have to go to the place where you define your custom header for your blog and paste the code you see given in the first post but with your own details put in.
So generate the html version of Statcounter and take from that code just the pieces you need, as indicated above. Use Notepad to help you prepare the necesary code to paste into your custom html section for the header.

be sure when you add the code you do not put it between the <style> and </style> syntax if you've modified your page. the statcounter will not work if placed there.

Actually if you create a class there with the SC image as a background and later use that class in a div in the header portion it works.
But by now anybody who knows this much of both html and css is pretty good to make their own web pages, not rely on MySPace Laughing

Hey guys. I just got my stat counter to work perfectly. Most everyone is using CSS to style their pages so I went from there and found a working formula.

Here is my code and I will show you what you need and what to edit. Now for the code, everyone should have seen this type of code if you have edited you Myspace what so ever....

<style type=text/css>
body{background-image:url(http://c8.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=123456&java=0&security=12345678&invisi);
background-attachment:fixed;;
background-repeat:no-repeat;;
background-position:center;;
background-color:000000;}
table, tr, td{background-color:transparent;;
border:0px;;
padding:2;}
table table{border:0px;}
table table table {border:2px solid;;
border-color:FFFFFF;;
padding:2;;
background-color:000000;}
table table table table{border:0px;}
font, td, a, body, input, textarea, table, p, span, li, strong, div{color:FFFFFF;}
.blacktext10{color:white;}
.blacktext12{color:white;}
.btext{color:white;}
.lightbluetext8{color:white;}
.nametext{color:white;}
.orangetext15{color:white;}
.redbtext{color:FFFFFF;}
.redbtext12{color:FFFFFF;}
.redtext{color:FFFFFF;}
.redtext8{color:FFFFFF;}
.text{color:FFFFFF;}
.FFFFFFtext12{color:FFFFFF;}
a:link{color:FFFFFF;}
a:visited{color:FFFFFF;}
a:active{color:FFFFFF;}
a:hover{color:FFFFFF;}
a.navbar{color:FFFFFF;}
a.navbar:link{color:FFFFFF;}
a.navbar:active{color:FFFFFF;}
a.navbar:visited{color:FFFFFF;}
a.navbar:hover{color:FFFFFF;}
a.redlink:link{color:FFFFFF;}
a.redlink:active{color:FFFFFF;}
a.redlink:visited{color:FFFFFF;}
a.redlink:hover{color:FFFFFF;}
a.searchlinksmall{color:FFFFFF;}
a.searchlinksmall:link{color:FFFFFF;}
a.searchlinksmall:active{color:FFFFFF;}
a.searchlinksmall:visited{color:FFFFFF;}

a.searchlinksmall:hover{color:FFFFFF;}

</style>
</div>

Ok now the main points here are as follows:
1. Know your project and security numbers (if you don’t they will be pointed out later)
2. See the red code? You want that exact code in your style with the exception of where it has sc_proj=xxxxxx and security=xxxxxxx those should coordinate to your numbers.
3. If you just plug and play your numbers into that code, it will work for you.
4. Under your "configure counter" page in SC, choose invisible or you will have a counter as the background.

The next few steps is for finding your numbers and configuring the counter

1. Now what I did worked for me and I suggest you follow the same. In your "my projects” on SC, click on the "install code and customize" wrench and go to install code. Here’s where you NEED TO READ CAREFULLY. First page select VISIBLE COUNTER. NO FRAMES. HTML ONLY COUNTER. NO WEB PAGE EDITOR.
2. Now u will see some code like

<!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<img src="http://c8.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=123456&amp;java=0&amp;security=12345678&amp;invisible=1" alt="free web page hit counter" border="0">
<!-- End of StatCounter Code -->

3. So taking the red code from above, place the green code into the sc_project=xxxxxxx area and the blue code into the security=xxxxxxx area.[/code]
4. Under your "configure counter" page in SC, choose invisible or you will have a counter as the background.

Yes, in that example it must start with <div style= since there is the closing div tag. You can use what ever html tag you like (e.g. <p style=) if it suits any specific purpose on the page. But in that case the closing tag must be change also, to matching the opening tag.

Oops, sorry, I left out the <div for some weird reason. Embarassed

Fixed it now.

Missie, there's no target="blank" involved.

Here's a better way to control where you decide to put the counter:

Quote:
<td style="background-image:url(http://c9.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=999999&amp;java=0&amp;invisible=1&amp;security=zzzzzzz); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center;"></td>

As you can see, the <div> has been changed to <td>. And it still works.

The problem with <div>s is that it always creates a line break before it, which makes it near impossible to put into existing tables.

<td> means table cell. And funnily, it can stand alone without being inside a <table>. So now you can put this within a line (at last). But be sure to remove the height and width CSS so that you don't make the cell 60px long (if you plan on putting text over it)

How to do it:
Original: You want to put the counter THERE-><-HERE in one line.

Write:
Quote:
<table><tr><td>You want to put the counter THER-></td>

<td style="background-image:url(http://c9.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=999999&amp;java=0&amp;invisible=0&amp;security=zzzzzzz); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center;"></td>

<td><-HERE in one line.</td></tr></table>

Aren't you complicating matters too much?
The <td ...> ...</td> tags have to be placed within a pair of <table ... > ...</table> tags.

A <div..> ..</div> is a much simpler tag.

Both ways would generate a new line in any case, while the <table ..> may introduce extra spacing as well.

Use a table if you already have a table there - not likely though since it would be in the blog title actually.

I have a question regarding this post and to Myspace. Will SC not only show you the traffic to your site but also the other Myspace users that have looked at your page? For instance, say a friend of mine comes and looks at my page, will it show me either their username or url or something identifiable as to who they are? And if it DOES NOT do this, does anyone know of a way it can be done? Thanks.

Hi. I have been working at this for a while now and it doesn't seem like it should be that hard only I am having problems with it. Copy and pasted the link
<div style="background-image:url(http://c8.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=955262&amp;java=0&amp;invisible=1&amp;security=2c62165); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center; width:1px; height:1px;"></div>
Into the about me section on myspace. I also put it in the Your Own Header HTML in the Blog section. But now it doesn't work my blogs right.
I go to test it to see if the stat counter works and it doesn't show up that anyone has looked at it. I thought I was doing everything right . ..but if it's not working then I'm guessing I messed up along the way.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks !

Actually you can only put it in the blog header, not anywhere else, I seem to remember.

In any case you have to give a link to the page where you expect it to show up. We cannot work in the dark.

For one thing your security code appears to be wrong.

Otherwise I can see the code on your page so techniclally it shoudl be working.

I know your security code iw wring because when I try to access http://c8.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=955262&java=0&invisible=1&security=2c12605 I get that message showing.

So you should look into it.
What is the actual security code for your project?

This solution refers to using the counter as the backgound image to a small div, used just in the title, 1px x 1px or so, thus invisible, it doesn't affect the backgound of your page. Give it a try and then you'll understand.

i am working on the fine tuneing of the code for having your counter in the online status bar.

this is what i have

<style type="text/css"> table table table td.text div img {visibility:hidden;} table table table td.text div { background-image:url('http://cXX.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=XXXXX&java=0&security=XXXXX&invisi');} able table table td.text table table div img {visibility:visible;} table table table td.text table table div { background-image:none;} </style><div style="position:absolute;left:0px;top:0px;width:70px;height:14px;"></div></a>

That code is quite incorrect. You seem to be getting a bit of too creative with your html code Wink

What are you trying to do?

I don't know where my "security code" is. I don't know what an "SC" is?? Would someone mind speaking in English to a newbie? Please... do I need to sign up at Stat Counter.com... and then THAT is where I get my security code ..etc? Because I am confused as all hell. I know how to follow instructions, and copy+paste code. No one has ever taught me how to work with any html. I have taught myself everything I know. So if you explain this to me, it won't be a waste of time I promise. Here's Myspace. I just need to learn some of this first before I just into the pool of "knowing all." I really want to add a Hit counter to my site. I don't want to know all the info about who visited and what not.. although I wouldn't mind. But I just want something basic. So please from STEP 1. can we start over with the instructions. Smile

If you don't have an account at www.statcounter.com all this is in vain.

SC = StatCounter. Smile

Your security code is a code that gets generated along with your project code.

Start by signing up and creating your profile and creating a project and follow all instructions there and in this thread and you will hopefully understand.

Unfortunately with zero knowledge of html it's practically impossible to manage any kind of web page. You will have to get your head around some of the basic concepts or you won't be able to follow.

Here's a beginner's guide to web page creations: www.htmlgoodies.com .

In any case, your first step here is to get your account, project and generate the required code you will need to work with.

Then go back to the top of this thread and all posts in it and see how it applies.

Hi chrisooc Smile
given that in forums and profile pages that accept BBCode only
we can't use the counter in the [img] part
is it possible to use the solution you posted?
If the answer is yes would you post it in BBCode also?
Thanks!
