" no referring link" appears most often, and I guess that the majority of these are coming from another url that automatically redirects to our main site. Am I right in assuming that we need to insert the code onto the redirecting site, in order to see the orgins of these visitors?

Many thanks

hi Timo,

exactly. you need the code on the redirecting site to get the came from info.

Doesn't that also come up if the site is accessed via the visitor's favourites? i.e. so that there is no referring link

I often find "blocked referrer" comes up even when I am sure the visitor has come from a page within my site. How does that happen? Sorry if I sound a bit thick but I am no techie :)

that happens if the user has their referrer property in their browser blocked.

for those users their referrer will always be blocked and you will never be able to get it i'm afraid.

I am just trying to understand or a get a feel for why someone or perhaps an organisation might have their referrer blocked. I am guessing privacy, but I for one, and I guess many others too, woudn't know how to go about doing this.

If often comes as standard from those anti-pop up blockers.

Of course when they realise they aren't actually able to use some websites because of it, they uninstall it. Some websites use the referrer agent as an extra security message, if you don't have it you won't be able to use some websites.

We are getting multiple hits not showing on the counter because it is users who have the counter blocked via their ad blocker. Is there any code that can stop users of ad blockers accessing the site? We do not have ads and they are using the blocker strictly to avoid the counter.

There certainly are many ways to stop people who use ad blockers from visiting and using your website. I've never set something like this up myself though.

Do we get "No refering link" also when the user actually typed the address in the browser? Could it mean that he has not been directed from another site?

no we are able to track that.

you're told it's a direct request, bookmark or they typed the URL in.

We are getting a "no referring link" in our stats for people who are clearly browsing our website (as their IP address is the same). Could we be getting this because they are using drop-down menu links on our website? Or what other reason could there be?

Thanks.

that's likely the reason.

make sure you have the code installed right on the page as well.
