Sudden Increase in Hit Counts

On my projects list, the hit count for some of my sites has suddenly shot by by a large number - about 800. On going to the summary page, it doesn't show the number of visitors that the project list does. Am I reading this in the wrong way or is there an error in the hit counting somewhere?

There is a new feature on the projects page - life time hits (total hits for the life time of your counter) along with the normal monthly hits....
