In the Came from list of my StatCounter I sometimes get these three messages

No referring link
referrer blocked
referrer hidden

Can anyone explain the meaning of these messages and the differences between them?

Many thanks for a great free service.

No referring link I take to mean that the visitor has the site on their favourites/bookmarked.

I queried the Referer blocked and if I remember correctly the webmaster told me that it is where a visitor has blocked this information in their browser and therefore there is no way we can know.

I guess Hidden Referrer is the same or similar.

I have the stat counter html code just on my homepage, and I see on my Came from list, pages on my site. Does that mean that they (visitor) where on a page on my site (not the home page) then clicked on the homepage button :?:

if you have the code installed correctly then it could mean that they were on your homepage and clicked a link to your homepage.

First off, I really appreciate your great service.

So I'm just another one of those with this "No referring link" problem. I just spent a good amount of time, going though all those related threads, but I still can't fix the problem.

I get "No referring link" from every visitor, and find it odd.

If you could help me out, that'd be awesome.

Thanks.

PS:

My user name is the same as this one: "PinkSpyder"

Thanks...

Is your site using frames?

No...

I'm using the counter on my profile of one of those online community things. Do you think that has something to do with this problem?

I appreciate your quick reply....

I also get "No referring link" from every visitor on one of my projects. It used to show referring links and then stopped.

My other projects are working fine.

This is the site with the problem

Oh, what kind of community "thing" is it? a forum? a blog? I'm pretty sure that would be the reason, though I'd have to see its implementation to understand what is happening.

I put my statcounter code in the footer segment of the template of my IBP forum. Likewise for my guestbook.

In another type of forum, where there is no footer specifically defined, I put it in the custom header as an invisible counter.

Is it possible the online community "thing" doesn't allow javascript and you had to install the HTML counter? In that case you'd be missing all the goodies that javascript can gather about the visitor.

It's MySpace.

http://www.myspace.com

and I put this invisible counter on my profile there. You're right. They don't allow Javascript, so I regenerate the HTML tag. So that's probably why it's not collecting referring links? Does it have to be javascript counter?

Thanks, again...

Yes, only the Javascript counter can collect all that information. It's the nature of the beast at this point in time.

Aw, that sucks. I need to find some other way, then. Thanks, again, for your help, though.

I honestly don't think you can find another way.

Hi,
My statcounter was working perfectly, but i added a new index page, and put the code on that page to, but now when i look at "came from" it only says visitors came from my own webdomain (members.lycos.nl) I figured that i made a mistake with the code or i have to edit my settings somewhere.

on the page project settings it says :
Website URL
This is very beneficial for the reporting. By specifying your different URLs on a new line like:
http://mydomain.com
http://www.mydomain.com
it allows us to customise the reports better for you.

Im not really sure if that has anything to do with this but i filled in my two adresses :
http://members.lycos.nl/toaliced/
www.boekenburcht.tk

Hopyfully someone knows whats going on, because i really like to know where my visitors came from, and i doubt it they all have me bookmarked :)

At the botom of the Came from page you can specify Show External links only. This will not show any links from urls listed on the settings page (those will be considered internal urls).

Okay, when i do that i get a few visitors from google and other sites, but also visitors from
www.boekenburcht.tk (thats my site)

and still 80% coming from
members.lycos.nl/toaliced/
and thats my domain

Im so lost..........

Make sure you put all the web site urls that belong to you (with and without www) in your settings. This way they will be considered internal links.
