Guys, i run a growing website for Business school students in India - http://www.themavericks.net . But sadly, web hosting is expensive in India and everytime i need to increase my webspace, i need to shell out tons of money.
I am willing to post your logo, if you guys let me host a discussion board for my website.
No ads please, neither will i place. Just two logos mine and yours.
hope i get some response
Nice site! How much are you paying for web hosting? Can you move elsewhere to get it hosted?

Thank you buddy!. I worked a lot on my website and get many learned visitors. I am sure my visitors would love have a discussion board in which they can share their academic interests. I pay quite less for hosting, but that is a no-frill webspace. To have database, php and space for running a board i would have to shell out equivalent to $50 per year. Thats a lot of money!
Any help will be acknowledged.

I don't mind moving out for hosting but i need php, mysql and authortity to change MX records.
I don't know if the community is large enough on StatCounter to help you out, but keep persisiting and asking. You'll find some web host that will take you on.
A great place to ask would be http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
And perhaps you should consider doing a little bit of advertising on the site to at least cover your costs.

ya but in India its difficult to find people who would wanna advertise in a relatively small websites. I do run some banners, but it will take time for money to flow in. Thanks for the link, i hope i find someone! Meanwhile i will keep this thread alive to increase my chances.

I know you said about no ads but just to give you the option. In my opinion the best free boards are at www.proboards.com and they run one bar of ads near the top of the page and a smaller ad near the bottom. You can pay, I believe, $5.99 to receive ad-free for 50,000 page views. Hope that helps.
Yeah I'd agree webmoriar, that would probably be your best bet.

I've been using a ProBoards forum for over 2 years now and would certainly recommend them. They host the Boards on their own servers, so you wouldn't need any extra webspace at all if you used them. One word of warning however. They will only host Boards that are entirely in English. Any other language is not acceptable and they will delete the Board in its entirety. Would this be a problem for you?
(I presume the English only proviso is so they can check that they're not inadvertently hosting porno/paedophile Boards etc.)
There's a server change going on at the moment, so my Board will be unavailable to view for a few more hours, but the design is very similar to this one. It's a free service in return for advertising. The adverts are very unobtrusive however. (Actually they're positively intriguing as they match the threads.) There are no pop ups at all. Once the server change has been completed, you'll be able to see the Board in action at www.catsup.co.uk/message.htm
There's another free host at http://www.xsorbit.com/. A lot of the features that are standard at ProBoards are not available with their free package however. Also I have no idea what their support/stability is like.

Good point Annied they do have to be in English so they can check for TOS(Terms of Service) violations. And yes it is intriguing how the ads match the threads :)
Check out my board at http://captainmoriar.proboards26.com if you like.

I'm on the dreaded Server 6 which has been having all the problems this week. All the affected Boards have now been transferred to another Server and are, I hope, back to normal. For a free service, I'm always very impressed with the support and speed with which problems are resolved.
I had a quick look at your Board, but I'm afraid my interest in things military is probably as limited as your interest in cats (the main subject of my Board). In my defence, I do have a great interest in the British Home Front 39-45 though.

Lol that is cool. I saw you posting on that Server 6 thread today actually. Have you been to any of the numerous Home Front museums throughout England? I am sure you have, I love history and going to those and ones like The Imperial War Museum are great.

great guys, that helped a lot. Now i have options. But, come to think of it. How does webspace will i require to put a phpBB board and say for 10,000 postings every two months?. 50Mb?

There's an excellent one near York, called Eden Camp. I've been there a couple of times. They even have a reconstruction of a POW escape tunnel. Not exactly Home Front, but POW escapes and SOE are two more topics that interest me.

You won't require any of your own webspace at all for the Board and the Messages. The Board itself is on a ProBoards server not yours. (That's why, when my Board was down recently, my website was still up and running normally.) The only extra webspace you'll use is for the link on your own website through to the Board and that's minimal. The link on my website (see below) is only 4.48kb
http://www.catsup.co.uk/index%20files/Click%20here%20button.gif (http://catsup.proboards1.com)
If you click on the pawprint it'll take you straight through to the Board.

dude! i know that. My question was how must webspace will i need in my web server to put say 20,000 messages in a phpBB board in my server. Depending on the answer i can plan my finances!
Most web hosts will treat server space for a MySQl database very different to web space for a site with files and pictures. You'd be wanting at least 50 megs of database space. At least. But I reckon your best bet is to go with something like proboards (or a non-english speaking alternative out there).

My website http://www.themavericks.net my site is growing day by day in size and one day it will explode. I won't be able to manage it then, with so many static pages it will be a hell for me. Just then one of my pals suggested phpNuke, he says it can save my life! I then learnt, that phpnuke comes with built-in everything!..as in polls, forums etc. I wanna ask
1. Is this true
2. I have a Win Xp machine (stand alone..not server).. can i run it on WinXp?How can i test phpNuke offline then?
Is there anything i need to download?
The best free forum host that I've found is: www.invisionfree.com
It is extremely customizable and most importantly... It's free!
I was highly impressed with it. I created an account for fun but haven't linked it to my site so there is no one there. You can see my example if you like at: http://s4.invisionfree.com/okc/index.php
Hope this helps you out. Good luck!

First tell me how much space and bandwidth, system resorces (memory) you are looking at using. :)
Looks like you're already moving. No access to your site.
Check dsl prices at removed link for my own peace of what little mind i have left.

you can also try out Forumer.Com (lucky google showed them up when i searched), they offer unlimited bandwidth & storage & both IPB & phpBB forum hosting. Whats more you could even remove the ads by paying JUST 1$ for 6000fBucks, 1fBuck = 1 ad less page view & if you host IPB you can also set which usergroups see ads & which dont - you can really save some bucks here!
good luck

Have your heard about Forumotion.com?
It's very easy to sign up, you simply need to provide the forum name, subdomain (what will appear in the URL), password, email address and the category of the forum. All of this takes around two minutes, after which you can choose the initial forum skin, then you are taken directly to your new forum.
Give it a try ;)
Hope this can help!
Given the age of this thread I would hope the poster solved his problem a long time ago.

Did I miss the announcement or was it kept quiet as you both wished to be "secret mods"!
There was no announcement and it wasn't appropriate for either Richard or myself to make one. ;)
No secrets .... just quietly going about our business. ;)

Hi, sorry we didn't get a formal introduction.
I guess they thought, seeing as I couldn't stay away from the forum, they would put me to work ;-)

RichardBetter you do it yourselves (expose) then have one of the other mods do it for you.
oh I'd better quit everything I type ends up sounding naughty, which was not my initial intention.

What about creating a phpbb forum?
I had problem implementing mods too, but phpbb simplifies the task.
The most simple and efficient to create a forum, imho ;)
If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host :
Hope this can help!
