Lifetime vs. Displayed counter

It's my understanding that the "lifetime" count is the total number of users that have accessed the counter since the counter was created, correct? Is there another factor involved that would not make the counter display that number? My lifetime counter is 575,618 but my displayed counter read as 336,541.

Do I need to delete my old project and make a new one, or is that correct?

"Lifetime Count - The total number of pageloads over the lifetime of your website."

My Projects > Configure > Configure Counter > Display Customization > Display: Choose either "show pageloads" this will make it equal the lifetime count
or "show unique visitors" which will most likely be a number less then the pageloads (this is most likely what you have yours set on right now)
