Me too :)
I have been reading all the hype in this topic and think it would serve you (StatCounter) better if the truth were told.
First, let me say you DO have a good product and without a doubt are providing a great service. I would not be truthful if I didn't first make that clear. Personally, I have an account with StatCounter, but am waiting for some KEY fixes before I can switch to it. Let me also say that when those fixes come, I will be the first to come back and rave about your site as I can see many already do. In fact, when that day comes, I will upgrade from free to paid service as well.
Let's talk about the KEY fixes that need to be considered. I have already posted them and see that you are looking into those fixes very hard. However, like anything - I prefer to know exactly IF and WHEN you plan to make these fixes.
There are only two key problems I see that need to be changed. They deal directly with the display of statistics when you login and click the VISITOR link on the left.
The absolute biggest problem with this page is that each page viewed by the visitor is listed as its own listing/heading. I think you already can see all the reasons why this is fundamentally wrong in design. Most websites will have multiple pages viewed by EACH visitor and therefore should not be listed separately. I have an average of 12-20 pages viewed by EACH visitor. Not only does this display make this problematic to decipher, but uses up my free account in one day. I think it's obvious that we should only see one listing for each visitor that comes to our site during one day or after being gone for 30, 60, 120 minutes (whatever length of time deemed necessary). Once I click on a visitors magnifying glass, I should then be able to see all the pages he/she viewed.
Also, I think the display on that page does not highlight the important information clearly. Personally, I don't care what the OS, resolution, or browser is at THAT point. Without a doubt it's important, but perhaps not right there. What's important to me is the Date, Time, IP ADDRESS !!, web page (NOT title of page, but actual file name), and Referrer.
The reason I would prefer to see an IP address over the OS, resolution, and browser is because I want to quickly see the visitors to learn what they are doing. I'm not sure what value the OS plays in my analysis other than I know if they are using XP, I can expect them to be using IE 6.0 and know my form buttons will look better to them than if they're using Windows 2000. :)
There is an inherent problem with listing web page titles in this display as many programmers name their webpages the same on each page to better themselves in spidering of the major search engines. When you only show the Title of the page, all I see is the same thing over and over again; no value. Now if you show the file name instead, I can - at a glance - see what page they came in on, which would be 100% better.
I know you have the IP listed to the far right, but that makes it harder for me to compare then if they were put in one of the columns where I can quickly see them next to each other. By the way, the browser, OS, and resolution are nicely placed on the detailed page and therefore could be removed from the Visitor page. If I had my choice, I would like to see it like:
Date - Time - IP Address - Browser - Resolution - Webpage (filename)/Referrer.
After clicking on the magnifying glass, we see some good information. However, at the bottom in the Navigation path, you have again listed the TITLE of the web page and not the file name itself. All my pages are titled the same to benefit spidering in the search engines, so all I see over and over again is the same thing. That has no value. What should be displayed is the page's file name, so at a glance we can see what pages are actually visited. I realize we can place our mouse over the title and see the actual file name at the bottom of our browser, but fundamentally the current display is backwards.
Ok, so I've said what I thought had to be said. I think once you make these recommended changes, anything else you do will just be icing on the cake and make you that much better.
The BIG question now is - Will you be making these kind of changes and if so, WHEN can we expect to see them. Personally, think this is a pretty simple change since really what I'm suggesting is that you change the display of the data you are already collecting.
I know others have mentioned these problems as well, so I will be watching with great interest for the moment you make these changes. Please reply with SPECIFICS of if/when you see these changes being made.
Many thanks for your post hifh. I really do appreciate it when members take the time to put together a quality post like yours to tell us how to improve the service. (albeit in the wrong forum :) )
The major updates (advanced tracking and eCommerce tracking) are planned for the end of April but we could be able to implement the changes you suggested in the next few days. However our time is quite limited at the moment. Perhaps we can put in some overtime this weekend to get the visitor stats up to scratch.
Thanks for the positive reply.
I will be watching very closely for those two changes. I truly hope you can/will put in a few extra hours this weekend to make those changes.
Personally speaking, I will immediately switch from what I'm using now and use your service when I see them.
On a side note: The first time I tried to post a new topic (as a member) I was told only the website administrator could do that, so I clicked on the 'Post a Reply' button instead. Now I see that I can Post a new topic and it works.
No matter. I was glad to see you received the posting in a positive manner and may be able to make changes this weekend. I think we all will be very pleased when those changes are made.
Thanks again....

:? guess i am just such an appreciative and patient person
i just want to add,i appreciate the fact that you guys have worked your hearts out for this site and have given us a huge gift here.
it took me two weeks of researching sites to find that you are miles ahead of any other site that offers minimal free stats much less all your innovative features FREE..
so do not hurry for me when you hurry the stress causes problems.
I know you have many with great ideas but implement them as YOU SEE FIT..in your wisdom of timing also..
it is NOT EASY..nothing that changes anything is easy..every change affects many many other pages and functions on the site.
i am using another site with many free innovative features,,some new to puters just DEMAND..new things, not in thier plans right now..and say SHOULD TAKE ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO DO THAT I CAN DO IT ON MY SITE..
well,,,not....this is an intricate site...
i happen to realize that you are AWARD WINNING COMPUTER BRAIN GUYS..and you know the timing..and know what is best for all of us..you have given and given..staying up all nite, even when ill, we remember see?please pace yourself as you have...
you are doing it right the first time..and that does take thought planning testing and time.
YES I KNOW YOU HAVE PEOPLE POUNDING DOWN THE DOOR HERE TO become members...again..haha what a problem to have..
so proud of all you have accomplished and your wonderful ethics of giving the gift of free detailed stats for many of us...rare on the net, rare in business..
THANK YOU
ps hif...you may have been trying to post to the NEWS THREAD..if you look closely & read title it says News
The latest news about StatCounter - only the webmaster can create topics here but registered forum members can reply.

I COMPLETELY agree with oldz... I tried at least 7-8 other counter services before yours and none had the FREE, detailed stats and easy navigation that you guys offer. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!
p.s. hifh has some very good suggestions there, and I would love StatCounter all the more if they were implemented, but hey, I'm happy with what you guys already have.
