"netscape 5 bug" condensed list

I know the management is already aware of the bug that some browsers including versions of mozilla show up as "netscape 5" in the browser list (there never was a netscape 5). My question is do we have a definitive list of which browsers/versions? I'd like to have some idea of what all browsers/versions are subsumed under the "netscape 5" heading which make up %18 of my viewers until its fixed.

IMHO, this and the detecting win2k as NT bug are the two biggest flaws that need to be dealt with right now, before adding new clients or features.

I've recently tested Netscape 4.79 and 6.2. Both show up as Netscape 5.0. I would need that fix as well. At the moment I'm not sure which Netscape I should use for testing my website mostly with regards to CSS.

Yeah, I was about to post the same bug-report.
"Mozilla Firefox" 0.8 is detected as "Netscape 5". "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" is detected as "Windows" (when using Mozilla browser) or "Windows NT" (when using IE browser). Men, Netscape doesn't exist anymore, so does Windows NT 4.
The first posting is from January 2004 and today it's May 14, 2004 and still StatCounter does not have a solution for that bug.

Unless somebody knows of a better way to detect the OS, currently this is done by analyzing the contents of navigator.userAgent in javascript, or the result of getenv("HTTP_USER_AGENT") in PHP.

For my own OS, which is Windows 2000 pro, this simply returns:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322

Rgrettably, I don't see Windows 2000 Pro appearing anywhere in as many words.

Men, Netscape doesn't exist anymore, so does Windows NT 4.
The Netscape 5 rendering engine is still very much alive and kicking.
The Windows NT kernel has a monopoly.

(and that is just 1 of a zillion user agent strings):
getting the exact browser and OS version is very difficult.

This is not a matter of bugs in the stats,
but they are very difficult to interpret.
There is room for improvement,
but seems it isn't a top priority ...

Determining the OS and browser types is not that difficult job to do. Yeah, Windows NT is the most popular os kernel, but "Windows NT" usually is being associated with "Windows NT 4.0" that is not alive. "Windows 2000 Professional" usually represents itself as "Windows NT 5.0"; "Windows XP Professional" usually represents itself as "Windows NT 5.1", and it's not a big deal to find those strings and associate them with the proper OS name.
