Hello,

I am testing stat counter, along with several other counters to see which will work best for my site. One thing I have noticed is that stat counter seems to be missing some hits. For comparison, here is a list of the countries that stat counter lists:

1. United States,
2. Canada,
3. - (one page load),
4. Ethiopia.

Another counter I am using lists the following countries.

1. United States 341 92.4 %
2. Canada 8 2.2 %
3. Kenya 6 1.6 %
4. Belgium 4 1.1 %
5. Ethiopia 3 0.8 %
6. Egypt 3 0.8 %
7. Israel 2 0.5 %
8. Sweden 1 0.3 %
9. United Kingdom 1 0.3 %

As my site is an international one, it's important that i know the countries that are visiting. With 5 of the 9 countries missing, I think I am missing quite a bit. Any idea why this might be happening?

I don't know if this is related or not. While trying to fix a problem on a friends PC I accessed my own web site as a test. Having returned to my own machine I checked my webstats and am surprised to discover that the hit from my friends PC has not registered.

Does this throw some doubt on the accuracy of Statcounter counters or is there a simple explanation?

I get the same problem. If I look at the "Country" report and the "City" report - there are some Countries that show on the "City" report but not on the "Country" report and vice-versa.

I'd love to see a fix for this - it's very important information.

i have a faithful japanese visitor who is on my site several times a day. he does not show in my country stats. he has now made 86 visits.

once in a while he does turn up, but never for more than a day. he is there all the time in the main visitor stats.

i would like to award him some sort of a prize, it is very nice to be so appreciated. the least i can do is count him.

There is no doubting the superb service that Statcounter are providing, and for many of us, for Free ... HOWEVER ... I am losing confidence in the statistics I am being presented with and that will ultimately undermine the whole Statcounter experience. Am I alone in feeling that some sort of response from StatCounter themselves would be helpful at this time. Personally I would rather get my stats elsewhere with fewer facilities than get smart looking, fully functional stats that are wrong.

From my part, I have no way of determining just how bad the problem is. Any suggestions?

well most of the time we don't have any way of knowing if our stats are wrong. i can see that my faithful japanese visitor is being counted in the main stats but isn't being counted in the country stats, but in other cases how would you know? some things you just have to take on faith.

the only way the programmers will be able to fix things is if we tell them about discrepancies. for a long time i assumed that i had set up my stats wrong, and i have a long thread about this japan problem in the help. they say they are working on it.

my faithful japanese visitor now has 92 visits.

I have the UK listed as a hit in my details, but when looking at the by country it isn't there.
Problem? Think so, but not the end of the world. Still surprisingly pleased with this free service.

It seems that some IP addresses translate to different locations depending on the time of day or barometric pressure or......

My own IP address hardly ever shows up as being from Canada and even less from Montreal. It's no dinky ISP either, nothing less than Bell Sympatico, one of the major players in my neck of the woods.

The funniest thing happened tonight though when an IP address that I know is from Texas (it even says so in the name: Houston), was mapped to Hawaii! I happen to know who from that IP address visited my site (we had a chat going and I track the chat room hits). Of course, Hawaii sounds much more exotic than Texas :)

my faithful japanese visitor has now visited me 106 times. he never shows up in my country stats. he probably by now is the world's expert on the genealogy of greek mythology.

today i had someone from china there for more than half an hour, about 30 hits to metered pages. (only about 30 out of 3000 pages have meters). china does not show in my country stats.

The statcounter stats are extremely accurately except for the geo-location stats which can never be 100% accurate. But i think it is better to provide a best guess that is right in most situations than not to provide geo-location stats at all.

There are a couple of ways in which we can help improve this accuracy some more, but it will be very inefficient, but we have a few ideas.

my country stats at the moment show a total of 31 visits. my faithful japanese visitor at the moment shows 12 hits, ten hours between hits 5 and 6 and 3 hours between hist 11 and 12. my chinese visitor at the moment shows 34. 77, who else is missing. hum germany. i have had this germany in my country stats before, he goes to Orphic Theogony. not there in the country stats now. so that is 80. 10 from the guy who hides everything. so 90 from the visitor log.

oh that is interesting, i didn't notice this before. the summary shows 31 visits for may 5. are the country stats only for the current day? no, my faithful japanese visitor was here several times on may 5 and he isn't in the country stats for may 5.

i certainly am happy to play with my stats, and considering that they are free i can't complain at all. i am having a lot of fun watching people wander around my site, never expected to have any visitors, let alone the number i am getting. so i do very much appreciate statcounter.

but someone who spends a couple of hours on my site every day deserves some sort of recognition.
