... or Google, to be more specific.

I have recently copied my web site to a new isp and I have inserted "relocated" warnings on my old site pointing to the new one. It was my expectation that gradually, over time, the new site would be 'found' by Google (and others) and that my hits would slowly increase. I also expected that hits to my old site would probably remain fairly constant.

WRONG!

One day Google found my new site and hits to my old site have almost stopped. It's as if Google has figured out that one replaces the other. Is this what everyone else would have expected?

There's been some talk that Google disregards duplicate sites.
If your old site simply redirects to the new one, Google may in fact ignore it and it will drop in ranking. You'll have to wait until the new one earns its own ranking based on links to itself rather than to the old site.

Or words to that effect

If you were getting the majority of your hits through google then once google finds the redirects I believe it drops those pages in favour of the new pages, google is getting smart these days :)

It will be interesting to see what occurs after they go public...

You shouldn't have to wait for your new site to gain pr before it starts getting the traffic from your old site. You just need to use the 301 redirect. This redirect tells the browser and search engines that the content has been moved permanently, not temporarily. Usually when you do this kind of redirect, search engines will update their indexes pretty quickly and you won't lose your pagerank. I explain how to do this on my search engine blog (see my signature).
