Hello,

I am a new user of statcounter, and I encountered the following problem with Region/City.

I live in Holland, and when I login on my homepage, statcounter tells me I'm from the city Ede in Gelderland, but I live in Rijssen, Overijssel.
When my sister visists my homepage, statcounter tells me she is from Veldhoven, Noord-Brabant. But that's 200 km away from where she really lives, also in Overijssel.

These are the only visitors I really know where they live, and statcounter is both times wrong.

Is it a known problem that the City/Region is most of the times wrong, or is this just bad luck?

It's hard for me to believe that this is just bad luck.

Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately this is related to where the ISP that the visitor uses is located and not much can be done to add any precision. A given IP address can apply sometimes to a wide area. An ISP that services a wide area but with few nodes will translate in less precise results.

A 200 km radius is really not that bad. At least it's on the same continent :)

Well, this is my understanding of how the geo-location works. My own IP address generally translates to a different Canadian province (I live in Montreal, Quebec, it shows Toronto, Ontario). This is the fault of my ISP because it identifies itself that way (headquartered in Ontario bur serving 2 whole provonces or more).

Thank you,

But it is a bit strange then. There is only 10 km between me and my sister, and we both have the same ISP. We both get 2 different City/Regions, and none of them is the same as where our ISP is located.

But I know now that often the City/Region is not the correct one. And in a small country like The Netherlands 200 km is quite a lot, half the length of the country.

It is impossible to be 100% accurate all the time for the geo-location but it is very, very accurate 95% of the time. We update our database monthly to ensure the highest degree of accuracy possible.

One of the biggest problems is with AOL who use a web proxy for all the users so it is very, very difficult to accurately determine the location of AOL users.

but there is currently a project that works on the GPS system inwhich anyone using a satilite connection can be traced by there ip address. unforunatly the project is very secretive and that all i know about it.

Today I had an interesting one in my stats - a user whose host (mail.ruralwales.net) had the city specified as Buenos Aires and country as Argentina, but ISP is Powys County Council, in the UK.

I know that ruralwales.net belongs to PCC because I used to use their services myself. So how the hell does it appear to be on a different continent???

Hello I am a new member, just signed in, very interesting service!! :)

This is just to report a bug: Region and City are wrong ones, the ones detected are: Tuscany/Pisa but the real are: Lazio/Rome.
I use other Stats providers that show my own Region/City datas (Lazio/Rome) the right data. It's very important to me to really know correct Region/City datas, I do need analisys of italian traffic for my site and I need right ones. I think I won't leave the other stat providers since I don't see this bug fixed.

bye

thanks for attention.

Find full details on an IP address by using www.whois.sc/ipaddress and you'll probably see why it's happening.
