View Full Version : Statcounter: will it work with pbase.com?

I've had trouble previously installing java based site counters on my pbase.com photo gallery website ( http://www.pbase.com/richards1052/ ). For some reason, pbase disables some types of javascript code.
I'm not privy to how statcounter works. Can anyone tell me whether they think it'll work w. statcounter? Or will I have the same problems with it that I've had w. sitemeter.com's counter?
BTW, the workaround I've used is to install special code within the Profile page & it counts at least some hits. I am still a bit suspicious because my internal gallery hit counter (a woeful piece of crap) counts many more hits than what sitemeter is currently picking up. Also, the vast number of hits counted by sitemeter seem to be for the Profile pg. & there are vastly fewer for the indivual galleries. So I'm guessing it's picking up Profile hits well, but individual gallery hits (where I can't seem to successfully install the same counter code) poorly.
Here is the code installed in the Profile:
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">var site="sm9pbase"</script>
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2" src="http://sm9.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=sm9pbase">
</script>
<noscript>
<a href="http://sm9.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=sm9pbase" target="_top">
http://sm9.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=sm9pbase</a>
</noscript>

Is there no HTML header or footer section you can customize for yourself on that service?
If there is, you can add the Statcounter code at the end of the footer section, just before where the </body> tag would be.
Although, mind you, I have looked a bit at the Pbase site and didn't see any place you can customize stuff in html. I did see reference to CSS, but they too are limited to only a few classes that Pbase interprets. Hard to tell without digging right into it.

But when I tried to add the Webbot code listed above, I couldn't successfully add it. Actually, I don't know if it worked but I do know that my actual gallery screen displayed the gallery url, which I don't think it should've if the code was working properly.

Those 3 lines in the beginning ought to be comments, but some end up being displayed. Maybe you can take out all the lines starting with <!-- and see what happens.

Removing the lines does clear up the garbage displaying on the gallery pg. But when I click on the sitemeter logo, it generates the following botched URL:http://sm9.sitemeter.com/%3Cnoscript%3E%3Ca%20href=instead of the correct URL: http://sm9.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=sm9pbaseWould you have any idea if there's a workaround for this problem or is it insurmountable?

If pbase does not allow javascript to be inserted into its pages, then when you generate the StatCounter code with the "HTML only counter" option checked. That will work but you won't get the best stats information out of it. (like referrals)Yeah, if all you get is the number of hits but nothing more--then it is a pretty poor feature. But thanks for informing me of the limitations of my situation.

Hey, I just went to your gallery and clicked on Sitemeter and it worked - it went to the sitemeter site and displayed your stats.
On other pages though the button doesn't display. I found the code in the source. It is only the portion inside the <noscript>...</noscript> tags.
Another thing is it appears to not be counting my pageviews, because all you have is the link to the stats, but not the stats gathering script itself. Did you leave out the scripts? or did Pbase eat them up?
Anyway, will you be trying the same thing with Statccounter?

BTW, the code which you find working on my root gallery pg. is merely the following:http://genji.image.pbase.com/u47/richards1052/upload/30013347.sitemeterLogo.gif (http://www.sitemeter.com/default.asp?action=stats&site=sm9pbase)Since this has no javascript code in it I'm assuming it's only allowing the counter to count hits & no other data. If I'm right, this is not really what I'm looking for in terms of giving me a full picture of my visitors.

That's probably correct. Unfortunately if Pbase doesn't allow javascript, there's nothing else you can do.
Have you tried to ask questions in their forum?
BTW, are you paying for the gallery? If you are and it's more than $30/year, there are tons of cheaper solutions that allow full web hosting too.

I've had running discussions with many pbase members on this. SOme claim to have found a way to make sitemeter work, but I haven't been able to replicate their solution for me. One suggested that I add the first set of code I posted here to my account Profile, which I did. IT seems that the Profile page doesn't have the same javascript prohibition as the gallery pgs. because the code in the Profile does count visitors correctly & give the other data as well. But this same code will not work on a gallery pg. Go figure.
I'm paying $23/yr for my service. More than the money, I like a lot of the features at pbase (though it is sorely lacking in some as well) & the fact that I'm among a large number of folks with similar photography interests.
I've tried Tripod.com & Typepad's photo gallery (where I maintain my blog) & just don't like it (TP) nearly as much for some reason. It seems to give me less control over my finished product. If you know of a superior photo gallery site, let me know what you've found.
