I have been downloading video from my Digital video camera, editing it, saving as either Avi's or Mpeg etc... Then.....
I am trying to burn them onto DVD using nero 6. I have burnt a Vcd that will play on the computer but not on my DVD player, but DVD, Mmmm not happening. Any ideas at all folks.
I would like to be able to play either VCD or DVD on my DVD player.
Cheers

Hi,
Yep it was a really cheap DVD player, (well, not as cheap as you can get them now of course) it is the luck of the draw with these cheapies, my brothers DVD player was just as cheap but he can play VCD's.
I am going to be getting another one soon anyway as it keeps freezing up if you leave it on for more than 1 1/2 hours. Fine if you have a fairly short video to watch.
Any one got any suggestions of a fairly good DVD player that will play VCD's?
Cheers.

Most DVD players now list what they play on the front panel - latest models seem to play most things(even cheap models £50 or less), go to the stores (currys, dixons, Argos etc) and checkout the boxes, should be listed on there.
Don't forget - you want it to play DVDs as well

I was going to go to my local Richer Sounds store. Anyone used these?
Cheers.

I am willing to guess that you have bought a cheap DVD player from the supermarket - these have things called 'regional settings' in them, which stops you from playing some DVDs from some areas or manufacturers. A more expensive mail-order DVD player will be free from these niggles - sorry
Not necessarily, it is ALWAYS best to check beforehand. Incidentally, it can be very easy to remove regional coding from dvd players, it is usually done by entering a numbercode, which a dealer will usually tell you if they think it means losing a sale!
Richer Sounds used to have a reputation years ago for selling gear that wasn't quite as reliable as it could have been, however I bought a couple of items from them and they were ok. The Amplifier I purchased has worked fine for years now, and although the CD player has just broken down, it did work for a long time beforehand.
As for suggestions for a VCD playing DVD player, try http://www.whathifi.com/buyguide_front.asp this is a UK publication, and should tell you what dvd players play VCDs and how much they are.
Hope this helps geekgirl!

if your shopping in richer sounds...
you cant go wring with a cyberhome, these babies will play everything(check model number though) i have the 500 series, playes all region dvds, vcd, svcd
dvd+r\rw and dvd-r\rw cd-r\rw, mp3. a rake load of outputs on the back for sound and video(including co ax and optical, handy if you have a home cinema system.
if your near a curries store. then they have a new phillips model that plays all the above and will play divx, avi and mpg directly as well. it has alll the above sound features and slightly less outputs, but it does have progressive scan(handy for home projector) in ireland its on €65 so about £40 ish. well worth a look. they may have the model in richersounds too

I have never managed to create a DVD using Nero. I can burn VCD and that plays in my dvd player.
For a DVD I need to use a dvd authoring program like Sonic My Dvd - which came with the dvd burner.
It's because Nero doesn't make all the various segments necessary for the dvd to be played. You have to make them separately and them burn them to the dvd it seems, like data. For a VCD it does make them - but you have to figure out the settings. The vcd cannot exceed 30 minutes playing time.

Nicolle and I use Nero to burn DVDS all the time - like about 5 to 10 dvd's per week.
Nero works fine with DVD movies or DVD data storage. We burn either (or both at the same time) AVI, WMV, whatever we like. Sound and vision is good menus etc great.
And its the standard version of Nero, not the upgrade.

Ok, then mine's missing something, as it doesn't prepare the dvd the way I expect it with chapters and all that. Just a single file, which my dvd player cannot play. So best I can tell is it's a data file.

Actually the menu thingo is very good :) Some optioons are pretty hard to find, but when you do they are great :)
I think yours is an old version, but one of the problems Nero has is that it has the most weird updater known to man, woman, beast or burden or computer..

Nero .... has the most weird updater known to man, woman, beast or burden or computer..
Nero has an updater? :-D
Never seen that.
Been getting Nero with every cd burner I buy but it's always a limited version and not updatable.
Old? I only got it a year ago ....

Are you getting dvd's burned at all? Actual dvd's with the proper structure of a video dvd?
