View Full Version : Can't log on

I haven't been able to log on to my Statcounter project for over 24 hours now, and I'm wondering whether it's just me. I know others had problems, but they all seem to have been fixed, judging by the other threads. Every time I try to log in, I end up getting the message:

"The operation timed out while trying to contact my3.statcounter.com"

(At least that's what I remember it saying - sorry, it takes a while to get the message, and I forgot to write it down.)

The counter still seems to be working - on the page where I have it visible (http://presentsimple.blogspot.com/) it has been going up (slowly, as that page is not visited often), but I can't access statistics at all. Is it just me?

No problem for me here.

I suggest you delete all cookies and then try again.

I suggest you delete all cookies and then try again.

I just tried that, and got the same message. "The operation timed out while attempting to connect my2.statcounter.com".

I notice a new cookie was accepted, but that seems to be all that was achieved. This is very odd.

I'll keep trying various things, but would appreciate any other suggestions you can think of. I just initialized and reinstalled my system today, and wondered if it was something I did, but actually the problem with Statcounter started yesterday morning and I only did the big cleanup today, so I don't think so. It does rather complicate things, though - especially if Statcounter was having problems yesterday and today it's me, and they overlapped...

Thanks for the prompt response, by the way.

Check all your security and privacy settings. If you've just installed XP SP2, this raises the default security levels and may make some sites inaccessible.

If you're using IE, check Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Edit and look at the list of domains displayed there. If you see Statcounter there, you may find that it says Always Block. Change that to Always Allow.

If you're using other browsers, there will be similar settings to enable.

I'm on a Mac (old style - OS9.1) and using three browsers depending on which one works best for each site. Mostly I use Mozilla 1.3.1, which is not supported but works fine. I just tried using Netscape instead, and got similar results but with a different message:

"Netscape's network connection was refused by the server my2.statcounter.com. The server may not be accepting connections or may be busy. Try connecting again later."

I hadn't changed any of the settings, but went back and checked them anyway. I can't see anything in the privacy preferences that would stop this from working...

This is really baffling. I'll try Internet Explorer next.

All is well again. I went to bed still baffled, and when I woke up the problem had mysteriously disappeared. I had also discovered one other site where it was happening, too (www.death2spam.net.nz), and the webmaster told me nothing was wrong at that end either.

It's all very odd. I can only imagine my provider did something that got fixed overnight...? The timing was awful if that's what it was - having just made all those drastic changes on my computer I assumed it was something I'd done.

Whatever, it's all working again.

Thanks for the suggestions and help - and sorry to waste your time like that!
