Admittedly I am a newbie at this, but I thought I did everything correctly when I created my counter. I chose the promotional button and changed the background colour--or so I thought. However, the counter appears as a little black square with white writing. Is this a default setting? How can I change it to the button I want to see?
I've just put it on all the pages, so I hope it will eventually track all of my stats for the whole site.
I'd also like to know if I can get monthly totals for my stats, as I don't want pages and pages of daily stats.
Thanks for your help!

Well, from Configure Counter you can change size and number of digits displayed, the background and digits color, or whether you want an always invisible counter or a Statcounter logo (no digits) counter.
After you finished selecting this, you have to save it by pressing the button Set Counter Style at the bottom of the page. No need to modify your pages, this information is stored with your project at Statcounter and is reflected immediately in the way your statcounter looks on all your pages where you've placed that project counter code.
I hope this helps.

I don't know why it didn't work yesterday, but it did today--at least now I have the button, whereas yesterday I had only a black box with white numbers. I guess it isn't possible to change the colour of the button. Thanks for your help!

You either get the Statcounter button or the counter with digits, not both. You can change the color of the background and the digits as well as the number of digits, but you must always save the selection.
