Can anyone recommend a good guest book that doesn't download any crap or open loads of pop ups when you visit.

Cheers

Only if you can install it on your own web site. Generally you'll need php and MySql support for this.

If you can't do what chrisooc suggest, you trythe guestbook service from http://services.infinitefx.co.uk/

You just paste a Javascript string to a page of your own layout, and the guestbook entries is loaded to the page from the remote server. No crap is loaded and only "ad" is their own button in the bottom.

My web host had provided me with several services like chat, forum, guestbook, search engine within my site, e-mail forms, blogs etc... and I just customize them.

for example, here is my guestbook:
http://www.tuguiaonline.com/guestbook.html

and the other services already are in my home page in the "community" box: http://www.fixmysite.tuguiaonline.com/

Have you checked if you have those services included with your hosting?...

by the way, the one that Arne recommended looks good. I may sign up too.

PS. Geekgirl, your website looks great, fresh and happy!

Thanks Arne for the link to the infinitefx site. It looks interesting. I already use a php based guestbook installed on my own site, but I also use a free guestbook from Bravenet elsewhere and it's getting very annoying because of all the pop-ups. Likewise the mini-polls. If only I could find a way to extract the guestbook posts from the bravenet guestbook without actually using copy & paste I'd have made a move a long time ago.

Hey thanks for your great (and speedy) response.
I like the look of Arne's one. Think I will sign up and give it a go.

Thanks for your kind words about my site proteus.

When you make sites for others (occasionally) it really is nice to be able to put whatever stuff you like on your own page isn't it. I have the freedom to put a few bits about me and my family using the lovely pink of course. As the site says 'of little interest to others but of riveting interest to me!'

Cheers again

Hey Proteus, it looks like you have a very good host! I have never seen any host that include all that in the account. There probably are, but I want to use only Swedish hosts and most of them include something, but not "ready made" costumizible goodies like you have. :(

I have signed up for my guest book, I have configured it, I have put the code on my page, but............. for some reason the link to it (which is on the index page under the small links at the bottom) can only be seen when you go to one of the other pages then go back to the home page.

If you folks are not extremely busy would you mind checking this out and tell me if this is what is happening for you as well.

Cheers

Hi Geekgirl,

Worked fine in my browser (IE6+). The link was there and linked to the second page. Clicking brought up the popup. Looked fine although I didn't sign.

thank you for taking the time to do that.

Hi Geekgirl,

No problems. Have you considered cutting out the second page and getting the popup from the original link? It would save any maintainance on the second page.

Yes I originally had it like that but it put the board on the index page which cluttered it up a lot and for some reason you still had to go to another page then back for it to even show.

The weird and wonderful world of the web eh!

I love statcounter, how kind that they let us ramble about other stuff on their forum. I swear this forum has been such a useful part of learning for me and so many others.

Cheers.

Hi Geekgirl,

As I said, it worked fine with mine. If others comeback and say the same then it may have been a browser refresh issue.

I must agree with the Statcounter thing. Excellent service and can be free which is a bonus. There seem to be a lot of good and expert people on it also which speaks for itself.

I tested your guestbook and this is my quick review:

1.- I saw the link as soon as I entered your website. I ignore if you changed your settings between the last posts in this thread.

2.- When I tried to sign up your guestbook a pop up window opened. I felt that is easy to use and sign. However, when I pressed the button "enter" nothing happened.

3.- I closed the pop up window and repeated the step 2 again, and this time it worked fine.

4.- When I saw my post in your site, I realized that there is a pink line as a heading hidding the names of the guests and the date, right where the stars are. And right below of my message there is another line hidding my website address. So, nobody will be able to read my name nor my website address and I though in recommending you to change the font colors in that line.

5.- But when I realized that there is not only my name and website address but my whole IP number, that scared me! Why in the world everybody can spy my IP?... (yes, I know that the statcounter shows my IP too, but the difference is that it will show it only to you and nobody else)

6.- So, unless you can change this last setting and erase IP (probably I'm just being paranoic about this and nobody else really cares) I would say is OK let the line be pink to hidde my ip

Cheers!

Hey I agree on the IP thing, I will go and sort that out now. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Proteus, When I checked the guest book I couldn't see your IP. But I went back to the configuration anyway and there was a little check box which I had left a tick in which said 'show IP' so I have unchecked this put the code in again and re uploaded so shouldn't be a problem from now on.

Thank you for signing the guestbook as well, it is nice to see what it is going to look like. I am sure a few family members will moochie on and sign as well.

If anyone spots any other glitches please let me know.

Cheers
