Capability to track PDF files and downloaded files

How about a way to track PDF files, media files opened in a viewer, or files that are downloaded?

The only way I know of doing this now is via a redirect page that uses a meta tag to redirect to the destination file.

The problem with redirect pages are there is no way of knowing when one canceled a redirect and returned to the previous page without accessing the destination file.

I'm serving up media files in a pop-up window activated by clicking. The pop-up window displays a page that has the counter code in it. Since the media file is either displayed (for an image) or streamed (for an audio or video), this is pretty equivalent I figure.

The pop-up is for source and file protection actually, otherwise it wouldn't be needed.
