View Full Version : How do you find page rank?
This may sound like a stupid question, but where (Other than the google toolbar) can I see site pageranks?
I average about 110 visitors per day, and my search engine visitors have increased to about 30 per day, so I'm just wondering. My peak number of visitors is 1,498 in one day excluding my visits, which are blocked.
I've been working hard to get my site to look better and to have better content, and I think I'm off on a good start. I've also validated all my meta tags, and I think they play a big part in search engine ranks.
I've also made some improvements to my homepage, so if anyone would like to help me out, could you please tell me what you think? Thanks :)

Ok. Thanks :D
If you install something like the Google toolbar in your browser you can see page rankings for all the pages you view.
Having a 0 ranking may mean the site is too new and hasn't been discovered yet. It takes a while to have that go up.
I don't want the google toolbar, and that's why I posted about a different tool. But thanks anyway. :) I dont need an extra toolbar to trash up my browser window. I've had it before, but now its deleted.
Right now, I have a page rank of 2 on some of my pages.

Oh, well, I'm using it, I find lots of advantages (pop-up kiler, easy Google interface). To each his own.
Yeah, I see the advantages. However, I have 3 firewalls and a really powerful pop-up and ad stopper, so I gont need the toolbar.
I like the silktide review that you posted about earlier. It is a really nice report. It liked my site design somehow...gave me a 9.5.

Hello Momo,
Have you tried tha Alexa Ranking? Alexa gives you stats on visitor reach, traffic rank and page views. The SilkTide stats for your site's popularity for instance, came from Alexa's ranking of your site.
Go this url: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=themotec.com and see what I mean.
You can also upload a preview of your site and submit the links related to your site, etc... if that is what you want.
Alexa also provides you free traffic graphs which you can place on your site . . . if you want. And don't for get to read their disclaimers . . .
China Tea
Yes, I know about Alexa. Before, there was no data for the site, and now there is some. I have also updated the thumbnail and it should be up soon. Thanks for telling (reminding) me.

Anyone who is thinking of installing an Alexa toolbar should be aware beforehand that it IS what may be defined as "spyware" which uses your OS and browser to monitor information about ALL of your browsing activity, including the data you enter in online forms and search fields, the stuff you buy over the 'net etc etc which all goes back to third parties (Alexa and Microsoft) and maybe even fourth, fifth and sixth parties as well!
I am NOT ranting about the evils of spyware etc, but it's good to know this before you install stuff like Alexa, which is a very strong "data miner". In fact it can even do this without you installing the toolbar through the "Tools/Show Related Links feature of IE for more details see www.imilly.com/alexa.htm

Thanks for the notice! I usually never install any items of such sort, though. I don't have any toolbar installed now, either. All I need is the browser and FileZilla, my ftp program.

Hello Paul,
Thanks for the advisory.
While I do not have an Alexa toolbar installed, I have a link to their site as a reference to my traffic rank. I was trying to install their traffic rank banner on my site but I was not able to do it (thanks goodness) because
somehow, Yahoo Store, of which I am a member, gets its rank (no# 1) displayed, not mine.
So, what I did was to just reference the URL on which my visitor can verify my traffic rank (Now, I am no longer sure it's a good idea). I guess I wanted to make my visitors know my site is "legal".
My question is, does that link also affect my data as an Alexa toolbar or other related tool would?
I'll appreciate your advice.

Dear "China Tea"
"Alexa" is an nasty little thing and a gross invasion of privacy. It colludes with Microsoft, and has been known in the past (due to a Windows security flaw) to transmit the URLs of SSL encrypted pages (which may contain username, password, bank details etc) which is one of the reasons I am going on about it so much!
All of these toolbars (eg "Google" "Yahoo" etc) will "spy" on you to some degree, and could technically be classed as "spyware" as they wouldn't work if they didn't! however in my opinion, "Alexa" REALLY oversteps the line, and it is an integral part of IExplorer6 via it's "show related links function! If you would like to know more about this try www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/a/alexa.asp and the link in my previous posting.
To answer your question, simply linking to your Alexa "report" won't do you any harm, I was simply warning about the use of Alexa on your home pc, rather than linking to it through a website.
Incidentially, nice site! ... very well done! but did you know that the text on the navigation buttons isn't aligned properly? some of it is aligned to the left, and some of it is aligned to the centre.

In respect to Google's Toolbar privacy Policy:
Google is committed to helping its users ensure their privacy.
Google may collect information about web pages that you are viewing when the advanced functionality is enabled. However, this advanced functionality is optional, and can be easily disabled and re-enabled at any time (by selecting "Privacy Information..." in the Toolbar's "Google" menu.)
You will know the advanced functionality is enabled when the PageRank meter is visible on your Google Toolbar.
Google only collects the normal type of information that is already available to the websites you visit. This means, Google cannot collect, for example, your name, email address, telephone number, etc.
Google will not sell or provide personally identifiable information to any third parties.
Google will notify you if it changes these policies and will give you the opportunity to discontinue using the Google Toolbar
Incidentally, I never use the autofill feature either, in case this may lead to inadvertent colelction and broadcast.
You got to trust something eventually, or else get off the web altogether
Incidentially, nice site! ... very well done! but did you know that the text on the navigation buttons isn't aligned properly? some of it is aligned to the left, and some of it is aligned to the centre.
Strange, it looks just OK to me?
To "China Tea", please check your homepage with Firefox or Mozilla also. The bottom part of the page don't look nice at all, if you use something else than IE :(
Why don't you use the code for horizontal line (<hr>) in sted of the repeted hypherns (or whatever it is)? It's easier to set the with of the line with "hr" and automaticaly stops att full width if nothing else is set. Now I get a horizontal scrolling on that page, even with 1024x768 screen. :(
As long as you don't download anything, you're safe. I don't want any spyware, so thats why I never install any toolbars. I've already gotten a lot of viruses via email and also a lot of trojan horse attempts, and its always good not to make an email address widely know either (Submitting to "free" newsletters, special offers...). Thanks to my firewall and antivirus for blocking the viruses... 8)
Yeah, the bottom text looks huge in firefox. In IE, the big button is blurry(not in firefox). I find that button really annoying-changing sizes all the time.

I wasn't really going on about the Google one this time Christina! ... just the "Alexa" one, which is rightly dubbed as a "pest" with all the major spyware blockers, and could cause serious serious security issues (see my previous message). It is good to know these things too, so the user can make an informed choice, this is not the same as locking yourself in a cupboard due to Internet paranoia! ... BTW I use the Google toolbar too sometimes, but I definitely don't use the Alexa one!

LOL, I stopped using Alexa years ago, when it somehow got itself installed on my system at the time. I rememebr having a hell of a time trying to get rid of it. I can't even remember why I hated it so much, but I did
I vaguely remember it taking over the history folder and showing it differently from what I was used to. I don't like things that modify the normal functioning of my system, including changing icons, skins, and all that.

The alignment on the Navigational Bar was easy to understand . . . But the above is beyond me . . . I am not web savvy.

What he means, is that in a few palces you have lines of underscore appearing in the code, that on the screen appear to separate sections (like in the footer).
Instead of unsing a line of underscore ___________ there's a simple code in HTML which is <hr> and it inserts a solid horizontal line which has the advantage of also expnading or shrinking to fit the available space (i.e the screen or table cell in which it is placed).
You can further refine the <hr> tag to add a specific width to it and even a color, e.g.
<hr width="100" color="Deepskyblue">
Otherwise the default is the width available and the color is grey.

Just a bit more on the line.
Width can be pixels or percentage. Colour can be code. Align can be L-C-R (good if used with width and center). Size is the thickness. Noshade is obvious. If you leave the noshade off then you do not need to put shade.
The following is a thick red line
<hr width="100%" color="#FF0000" align="center" size="34" noshade>

I don't like the DW clean up. Sometimes it cuts the wrong things out so I just read the code.
No snow in my part of the UK. This time last year I had just got home after being snowed in, in Boston MA whilst doing a bit of Christmas shopping.

Oh, haven't experienced that yet! I find the odd time when I have double font tags or something like that, if I've been lazy and used DW to format some text, it will kindly put them under one tag, or remove one set if duplicated. Usually it finds nothing.
Boston can be snowy, though it's usually lots milder than Montreal is and never as cold.
