View Full Version : Blocking Cookie not 'sticking'

Hi there,

When I set my blocking cookies, they 'last' only for a short time.
I don't think my security settings are to blame as I allow all cookies.
I have several counters and every few days some, but not all, blocking cookies need to be reset.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Peter

Same here.

This seemed to start happening about a week ago. Additionally, I'm now forced to log in whenever I try to view my StatCounter pages -- even though I tell it to "Remember Me" every time.

I don't get it. I've added no new software, no new virus/firewall/spycatcher programs, nothing. My PC itself is in the same state it was in before these cookie problems kicked in.

Anyone know wassup?

SP

I think they are just set to expire after a short time, maybe a couple of days.

Well, 977 views of this so far and you are the only one to reply. Maybe nobody else has a problem... or nobody checked the status of their blocking cookies lately.
This is realy too bad. I like this counter and was thinking about switching to the pay version but now I'm not so sure anymore :-(

Until this past week, I'd never had to reset my blocking cookie. Ever.

And this isn't an every-few-days sort of thing. It seems that the blocking cookie "disappears" (or whatever) every time I open a new browser session. For instance, I've been forced to reset it at least five times this morning alone.

That, combined with the site's own failure to "Remember Me" with each return visit, makes me think something's going on with StatCounter cookies specifically. Other sites with login cookies still know who I am -- the New York Times just told me "Welcome, Semolina" during my first visit there in weeks.

OK, wait a sec. I do remember one change I recently made to Internet Explorer.

There were certain sites (message boards, mostly) where I got tired of having to hit refresh each time I visited, so that I could see the newest content.

I found some kind of option, somewhere in IE, that told the browser to "always look for latest version of Web pages," or something along those lines. And I clicked it.

Now, the odd thing is, I can't seem to find this setting anywhere. Went to Tools/Options, and can't find anything remotely resembling this.

Anybody know what I'm referring to?

Either way, I'm not sure if this is causing my login/blocking issue, but it's worth trying.

I changed that setting too recently. However, this should not have an effect on cookies. Of course with Micro$oft one never knows about these things.

Ah ha!

I think I've figured out what's causing this: the spyware-blocking program PestPatrol. After some process-of-elimination trials, I seem to have fingered it as the culprit.

Not sure WHY it's causing this problem, exactly, but I'll root around a bit and see if I can figure it out.

Freggo: You might want to see if you've got similar programs running that could be causing this issue.

I don't have Pest Patrol. Only Spybot and Adaware which I have to run myself. And my anti-virus of course.

But with many problems I've had with IE (under WIndows 2000) I have played around a lot with IE settings so I have no idea what may need to be re-tweaked.

I constantly open new windows so that's not it in my case. I rearely shut down or reboot so I've not specifically noticed any relationship between this an my vanishing cookies. They hang around for a couple of days at a time usually.

I never sign out from the Statcounter admin page, yet every couple of days I am signed out out of the blue - and this apparently is when my cookies are either expired or somehow gone. It is supposed to get rid of blocking cookies when you sign out, that's documented. The question is ... how am I getting to be signed out?

From what I see my settings all say to accept all cookies from this and some other sites, nothing blocked in particular (or it would never work), and it is placed on the trusted sites list. A minor puzzle

My stat counter (new member as of Jan 22 2005) is set to "Not logging my visits" and continues to display that way in settings, yet, it still logs each and ever page view of mine. its not like I can turn it on again because it says its on.

I too have never rec'd an email report since creating stat counter report. thats a whole other topic though, i understand, but I wanted to mention that i guess thats still not fixed either.

Well, you can try to unset and reset that again.

Are you using IE? There are special considerations for other browsers I think.

Well, I typically use Firefox to browse as I recently downloaded it and am TRYING to like it because it has nice features.... it's just the most important features of a browser are not quite up to par. But anyway, no... I am normally using Firefox. I figured that would probably be the reason.
Say, am I correct in assuming the email report issue was simply never resolved?

The emails are still AWOL. :( I managed to get a couple by manually requesting them, but even those now refuse to come.

For Firefox you have to specifically enable cookies (not sure where, but there's a post somewhere about this from not too long ago) and go and set the blocking cookie again while surfing in Firefox. Cookies set in IE are for IE alone ...... I think.... :?
