I got one hit from inktomi and there was no referring link. And got two hits from sexy**.blogspot... is anyone getting these? What does this mean? I also see that they haven't visited my page, or loaded anything... what's going on?

Hi Tinker creek,

I haven't a clue what is going on, nor what it means - but I'm getting the exact same thing !!
Kind of "reassuring" to know that i'm not the only one ...... I'm wondering if they aren't really visiting our sites, but somehow the code for our stats counter is being mimicked (????????????!!!)

Angela.

ok, I tried to fix my title like the other person, but I guess with the replies, it didn't matter anyway.

I've had a couple of those types of sites in my stats. I'll leave them well enough alone in future. One click was more than enough for me, thanks.

LOL! I guess you got quite an eyeful then

I wonder what's worse: those dubious spam incidents involving webloganalyzer (a would-be competitor or Statcounter) or these "other" siets?

Trust me, Chris, some of those sites make St. Catherines Street look kind. Unless they've cleaned up that part of Montreal. ;)

I'd say these are worse. Spam you can just chuck in the bin and forget about it. When it shows up on the stats and you know *you* haven't been there...

*lol* I've got two teenaged daughters who use my computer. I don't quite panic, but I do get concerned. (I panic when they're not looking.)

St- Cat's main attractions have been if not cleaned up, at least moved further east

Well, teens will be teens and parents will be parents. It's a cat and mouse game anyway. They'd worry if you didn't nag and suspect them, also they get upset and offended when you do. You can't win.

It's been a while since I was there, Chris. I'm not surprised that they've moved it.

*lol* And yeah, I know. Having teenagers is a losing battle. Parents lose every bit of common sense they had when the teenager turns 16 and don't get smart again until the teen turns 21 or so. I still have a few more years of stupidity in me yet. ;)

Another trick the spammers are starting is to mass post on blogs, or write mass contents. I'm starting a blog on my site and had to clean out about 2 dozen the first day it was up. <sigh>

Peg, do you really need to allow comments to be posted directly in your blog? Just like a guestbook, this invites spam and weird postings.

My blogs don't allow posts, but there's a link to a contact form, if there are comments or feedback pertaining to my blogs. I've not so far received any objectionable material there.

My guestbook has attracted its share of wackos and spambots so I'm trying to think of ways to discourage and prevent that. A friend of mine got several hundred spam entries in his guestbook by the time he checked it. :?

It's a convenience for some friends of mine, nothing more. I have the option, though, of vetoing the comments before they're posted. I can do a batch delete of the spam, while still keeping my friends' comments.

Although it won't prevent spam, one way to discourage it is to automatically add (if you can) the [rel="nofollow"] tag to any user-supplied anchors. It won't keep users from clicking, but the major search engines (http://www.google.com/googleblog/2005/01/preventing-comment-spam.html)will ignore such an entry. (Yahoo and MSN have said that they'll join Google in this.)

Well, yes, but then again it's better not to have them in the first place.

Even if the links don't get followed, the text remains to deface the blog or guestbook or whatever, at least until you get around to remove it. And that text can still get indexed. You don't want to achieve high ranking in search engines through THOSE keywords

Well, yes. It's better not to have the spam at all. All the nofollow tag can do is discourage those using comment spam to hike up PageRank.

Of course, it's best to delete the whole message. But even the most vigilant blogger might not get to those housecleaning chores before the SE spiders get there, so the tag is another tool among many.

I think I have that capability, Robinev. Thanks for thinking of it. I'll pop over now and see if I can figure out how to do it. *lol* I'm still getting used to what I can and cannot do.
