View Full Version : Give IP Addresses a Name

It would be really nice to be to label certain IPs that we know belong to a certain person with a name. That way instead of the IP showing, it would say "Rose" (or whatever you typed in). I've seen this in other programs and thought it worked well.

I love StatCounter though! Thanks so much!

It would be a wonderful addition as it would also make great business sense to do this - Here are two of the main benefits:-

-Easier to identify click fraudsters and other fraudsters
-See which competitor has visited your site

Actually I have noticed some of my larger competitors have there name in the IP address so i can spy on them but others i have to remember so tagging the ips with a name would make things a lot easier.

Just replying to hopefully encourage you guys to add this feature and perhaps take it one step further?

This isn't the first counter/visitor log I've used and most of the previous ones provided me with all of the following:

-If the visitor was a xanga member, I guess their IP was registered somewhere because the past trackers were capable of providing the xanga user's name.

-The referrering link

I realize that xanga is a special case, that there are limits that make xanga less compatible with your counter. I just wanted you to know that I've seen it given to me for free, so it must be possible.

I hope this reply doesn't sound degrading because I truly believe that this is one of the best services I've ever seen offered on the internet for free. I commend you guys for making your user interface so clear, your site so ad-free, and your counter so customizable.

Keep up the good work :)

I too agree and think that assigning a name to IP addressess would be a REALLY big help. Hope this gets implemented soon!

Would love this too. But where will that name be stored? Locally as a cookie? We need to know if there are any privacy issues (would the name be stored elsewhere) or time-issues like having to take care not to delete a certain cookie. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

No tracking script can find out a visitor's identity. You alone may think you know who is behind a particular IP address, and then might chose to refer to that as so-and-so. But that is totally your own assumption, not anyhting the tracking script can find out for you.

This would be most excellent!

When would this most excellent feature be available?

webmaster
01-26-2006, 11:05 AM
ok ok so i am really feeling the demand for this feature :)

how do you propose it would work?

When you "magnify" a user there would be a small text field with a little button that would say something like

Tag user as: [___________] Submit

Then what ... would you want a special visitor stats that only shows the tagged users or how would that work? When would you like to see this tag displayed?

thanks!

Aodhan.

Aodhan,

How about having a text-entry on each line of the "Recent Visitor Activity", called Nickname. You could Nickname the user there, and then in the IP field from there on you'd see Hostname: Nickname: Info.

Something like this:

Hostname: Mom at home: boston.verizon.net (255.255.1.1)

Even better would be if the nickname were not only related to IP address, but also to cookie. Because here in Iceland, there are only 2 or 3 major ISPs so half of my Icelandic traffic comes from simnet.is, for example. I'd like to be able to tag people down to the cookie level, and have them show up correctly identified. But not sure how much horsepower this would take for you.

Haha, I mean with the right tools we can find it ourselves quite easily.

Still starting a database... maybe I'm just paranoid. :)

If anybody thinks this is good, think again. A majority of users have dynamic IP addresses. You'd be sticking labels on unknown quantities. Quite useless in my opinion. But, to each his own hobby ;)

Cyrus255
06-15-2006, 02:27 AM
I don't think it's going to be possible. Or even happen.

Unless we it is a humanly edited directory with manual input for each IP... which might be good for spammers, criminals, etc. but has little ETHICAL use for regular IP's.

it's like stats in general - it has its pros and cons. freedom of information is just as important as data protection. we can track victims or track criminals...

People, don't forget that if you were to have such a tool, fine, but it will be your own label that goes on an ip - not anything rooted in reality.

As a majority of internet users the world over do not have a fixed Ip address this would be a rather useless and flawed feature in my opinion.

If you want to do somethign about it in the meanwhile, set up an Excel spreadsheet or an Access database with the Ips you think you recognize and the "names" you want to tag them with. Then download your log to an Excel spreadsheet or a csv file and simply join them. Much better than burdening your Statcounter account with tagging information of dubious value and accuracy.

I would certainly like to be able to label the IP addresses. It would help to quickly eliminate at a glance friends who were just checking in everyone else. :)

I am not sure that I agree with the suggestion in this; however, I would rather see Machine ID's in the stats. I use StatCounter on a corporate Intranet. Our associates across the country access our network through our hub in our corporate headquarters.

I have noticed that my company (along with most commericial and residential ISPs) uses dynamic IP addressing.

With the way stats are currently configured, I cannot get a view of 1 person's habits of viewing my site.

If Machine ID would be provided, IPs would be irrelevant.

Not sure what kind of (or any) security risk this would cause, but that is my vote.

Machine IDs in the stats please! :)

As a majority of internet users the world over do not have a fixed Ip address this would be a rather useless

That's funny, we have almost 1,600 registered users on our site from over 55 countries and 98% of them, as of their last visit, have the exact same IPA as when they registered. For the most part the only ones that don't are the one's with AOHell email addresses.

I would love to see this feature, it would help me trememndously. I could see at a glance which ones are staff, established members, and visitors with very good accuracy.

Machine ID's are not possible, they are an invasion of privacy. Any system worth anything would prevent that from being collected.

IŽd love this feature (name IP address), too.

Probably you can put the name in the cookie the next time the user comes back, this way you even save space in your database....

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!

What about another statcounter-weekend ;-)

Names in coookies?

That would mean accessing the database . looking up the ip in your named ip list and finding it or not and adding info to cookie.

Too time consuming and database intensive.

Plus imagine when that user takes a look at the contents of the cookie and finds himself named Mathilda

Hi,

But people can have different IP addresses. How will you know that which is which? For example some people visit websites through different places with different IP addresses. It will be too hard and it works only when your website has very limited number of visitors. What will you do when your website has 5000 visitors per day?

On the other hand, I will be happy if you let me know how you will know that an IP address is belonged to for example to John and then mark this IP for John?

Hopefully everyone by now has long since noticed the "edit" link alongside IP addresses that allows them to be labelled. Well done yet again SC teams!
