View Full Version : RESOLVED: Some missing stats between 22nd to 24th Jan on partition 6 / c7 server

Hello,

I completely apologise for the difficult experienced by customers with projects on partition 6 (the c7 server) - this was due to a hard disk failing, we then had to request ev1 to replace a hard disk on the master database server - then we had to restore the database - and unfortunately that can take some time.

It has been 100% fixed since tuesday evening - and you should not be experiencing any more dropped hits.

The reason we did not put one big notice on the homepage is because the service was completely unaffected for 90% of our members - but we need better communication lines when something like this goes wrong. So this is why the new Service Status section of the forum has been added today.

Obviously we hope to prevent this problem from happening as much as possible, but the only way to get around a hard disk failure like this causing zero problem is to have a database cluster. That will only be possible when we get our servers into our own rented datacenter, which I am working on.

So we don't have to rely and wait on ev1 to replace a hard disk - what should have happened is the faulty server should have been yanked out - and a brand new one shoved in with no loss in service whatsoever. Then the problematic server taken away to be fixed off the production line.

That's what I want to work towards for the future, but it will take some time. In the meantime - hard disks don't fail that often - this is only the second time that we've actually had a hard disk fail so it's unlikely you'll be experiencing any more problems on this front.

Once again please accept my apologies,

Aodhan Cullen
StatCounter CEO

Finaly we know what went wrong, thanks. To bad we lost many stats, I wast just getting huge hits and was counting on them, but it seems in the future
those things will be as good as gone. Be aware that those "10%" can make a difference ;-)

Regards, Pierre.

I see my statcounter setting for Science on the Rocks at www.sotr.org.nz is 0, and so of course my stats are not being recorded properly: they are not being totalled any longer for the month. :?

I can't see anything in the few forum msgs that I checked that discusses this problem. Is it just me?

I hope you can fix this - I don't seem to have the authority myself, in my account access, to redress it!

And what happened? This would not be caused by the hard disk failure you had a few days ago, would it?

Hi Nancy,

You were completed unaffected by this problem as your project was on a different server.

I logged into your account and your stats are coming up perfectly for me.

I'm not quite sure what problem you are having - could you explain it some more?

regards,

Aodhan.

Nnacy, your homepage doesn't validate: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotr.org.nz%2F . It's possible some of those errors may interfere with Statcounter's proper functioning.

Hi Chrisooc,

The code is installed fine on the page and the hits are being recorded.

thanks,

Aodhan.

Are there still problems logging stats? Mine has stopped again (28th Jan) I did nothing to the site, it's just stopped. I've tried re-installing the Java code, even the invisible counter one but nothing works. Java code from another sitemaster works fine, but I'd prefer statscounter if it would work

Aodhan:

Perhaps part of this is nothing more than what I think is change to the visual presentation of my data, where you give the same data but differently.

The 'My projects' page I used to see - after login - had an accumulating total for my website hits, starting from 0 on the 1st of the month. Suddenly, after a log-in and going to the my project page, on about 28 Jan 06 (NZ time), the accumulating total had left the scene and there was a small number recorded there, it being a previous day's worth of hits, I supposed.

I may not have looked farther right - which I now see has the total.

This seems to be a layout change - but it is not a problem, just that I didn't know.

Statcounter is still recording hits so the main thing's OK.

But, on the other hand, the counter limit is still set to 0 . This doesn't seem logical! Also I seem to think it used to be 100.

Thanks Christina,

I use a different validator, Net Mechanic - see http://www.netmechanic.com/toolbox/html-code.htm ...

It gives me no html errors for my home page www.sotr.org.nz .

However, I made a few alterations as the result of the 'w3c validator' webpage check as you showed me (callpadding to cellpadding; comments after the <! introduced and finished with -- ).

What's the story with these:

'w3c validator' says I have to put <!DOCTYPE HTML SYSTEM> at the top of the html - NetMechanic has never mentioned this ...

w3c says I can't use % signs in table settings - as in <td width=60%> - NM doesn't complain (and it works) ...

w3c says I can't use green as a setting for a rule ... NM doesn't mind.

I suppose this isn't a forum for html ... but I am just getting my bearings here.

My site's been going for a year and a half or so.

:)

Well, NetMachanic isn't an authority in web standards. It's probably old and hasn't kept up to date with all the new standards.

The attribute values have to be enclosed in quotes. So you have to use <td width="60%"> and it will be ok.

The doctype is recommended for browsers to render pages optimally. It instructs the browser as to which version of the markup language was used so they don't have to guess.

Colors shoudl be expressed in their hex codes. The value green is OK though, some word values are acceptable. You probably got a simple warning on that. Unless again it's a matter of not using quotes to enclose attribute values.

The counter limit is no longer being shown on the My Project page. Maybe you caught it in between redesigns. It's 100 for the free account.

Thank you for starting this forum. We should have a place to check the status of this service.

I would like to suggest that only you and/or your near-at-hand technical staff post here. Otherwise this forum will soon be overtaken by irrelivancy.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Christina, for all the good advice, it has really put me on the right new track I think. I had for a while been meaning to go into some things I didn't understand about html etc, and this has been part of the spur to do it.

I have switched to w3c for html validation and fixed most things up on a couple of pages.

I really do want to colour my horizontal lines (the hr command); I wish the html rules would not discourage this - tables just do not do as good a job! I understand I may have to learn something about style sheets (any I have used so far, I have done without really understanding).

For the hr tag:

<hr style="color: red;background-color: red;height: 3px;border: 1px solid red;width: 300px;">

will get you a 3px thick red line for 300px of width, for instance.

Hi,

For the past 2+ days I've been getting this error upon login:
"A link to the database server '' could not be established."

Any idea as to why this is occuring...?

Thanks,
Josh

Delete all your cookeis and log in again, all I can say. Do not use a bookmarked url for logging in. Got to www.statcounter.com and start from there.

My stats on "The Hiker" have stopped accumulating since about 4 AM this morning. Are they lost or will they appear later.
