2 sites same code?

Can it happen that someone takes your source code and add your counter to their site to start adding hits to your site without you knowing? or is it domain based only?

It can happen, and you would tell pretty quickly by the page url's that show up in your detail stats. If this happened all you would need to do is change your security code and fix all of you pages with the new code.

Yes, as Steve says. The hits will be added to your project log - not to your site itself :)

Change the security code for the project and update your web pages with the new code.

Is it not possible to make it so only a particular domain can have the counter? and this security code your talking about, can this only happen if someone guesses my security code or can someone simply add my source code counter to their site.

Anybody who looks in the source code of a web page can see what the whole thing is and copy it and use it on their own pages.

No, Statcounter cannot limit logging of hits by anything except a blocking cookie on the visitor's computer. So no matter on which web page the tracking code is, on which domain or even on a pc, it will log.

I find it very hard to believe that there isnt a way of adding the counter to a website and only counting hits from that domain, that means that any person using statcounter in theory has incorrect results as any site can add the same counter to their site, sites could also use this to add hits to their site that were never there in the first place... surely there must be a way to count hits from that domain name only.

As it was said before, change the security code. Any page using the wrong security code will result in an error.

No, there's no other way. In a way I think you should consider this a bonus - you are able to see which site has ripped your code off.

Are you getting hits from another domain????

If so, it is possible that someone downloaded source code for your entire page and adapted it to there own use, but didn't even know that the statcounter was on it.

Statcounter is domain specific. But, if someone has your statcounter code on their page, you should see that in your detailed results. To fix that, just change your security code, then the results will be specific to your domain again.

No one can enhance their stats by adding statcounter to someone else's website, "unless they have access to it". In other words, I can not get access to your pages and add my statcounter code, for the purpose of boosting my stats, unless I have your username/password to get in to edit your pages.

If you make a blank html page, stored on your own pc, and add to is just Statcounter code, and then view that page in the browser, it will log to the project to whom this code belongs. The page viewed will appear as a path and file name on your pc... or somebody else's pc.

Similarly if I simply copy your Statcounter code and put it on my web pages, every time they are loaded the hits will be logged to your account. Of course you will see the page url and know where the code was installed. If you then change your security code for that Statcounter code, if I use it as it was when I copied it it will no longer log to your project plus I will get an invalid project code message on my pages.

I agree with this, but, Statcounter code has to be domain specific if the owner of the project maintains it and protects themselves from those who may use their code in question to "beg/borrow/steal". It's not a statcounter problem as this could happen with any counter. It remains domain specific as long as the project owner makes sure that they protect their code.

The specific statcounter code needed to trigger a hit in one's stat's is domain/project dependant, O.K. project dependant, but it is the responsibility of the project owner to protect their domain. If I steal someone's code, it is still domain specific if the owner of that project see's I did the code/theft and responds by changing the security code.

How do you change the security code? If you simply redo the "install code" with the same options chosen, you'll get the same code as before.

Login, click on the wrench icon (Install Code and Customise Project Settings) for the project. On the "Installation and Configuration" page you have links to several options for configuration, the last one is "Security Code - Prevent unwanted hits from being logged in your project". There you can get the new security code.
