When I first signed up to statcounter I remember seeing an option to block my own i.p. address, I didn't do it then but would really like to do it now but can't find where to do it.

Can anyone help?!

Click the padlock icon next to a project and use Edit Project Settings. It's in there.

Hi Quickycards,

If you login to your account.

Click the 'wrench icon' beside a project name.

Click 'edit settings'.

The setting is available there.

Is there a way to have statcounter automatically update your ip? Mine changes every few days.

Well you can block a range of ip's now. You alwas see your current ip on the left side, when you are on that page where you can block ip's.

As for automatically updating it based on what yours is - update it where? in the admin page? it needs to be told to block it (i.e. you have to initiate it from that function), it cannot be automatic because what's to differentiate your access to your site from my access to your site?

For some reason my IP started being track yesterday, even after I have gone and re block them.

Your IP must have changed so you were blocking the old one but not the new one.

Since the "Get your BLOCKs off" and "What's in a name? A Rose by another name would smell as sweet" threads are closed, this 1 will do.

Are there any plans to "group" ip address labels (since many users have many varying IP addresses) and beyond that - possibly categorize them ?

You have ranges of ip addresses you can handle.

Let's not get carried away with a whole complex system built on a little frivolous thing like this.

Thanks for making my point, but u left out "somewhat useless".

I'd like to see an small icon replace the words "label this address".

<< You always see your current ip on the left side, when you are on that page where you can block ip's>>

I don't see my current IP anywhere on that page. Is this because I use a Mac?

However, when I noticed today that my own visits to my site were suddenly being counted, I was able to pick up the new IP address from the Recent Visitor Activity page. I blocked that IP address, and now my own visits aren't counted.

My big questions is: what caused my IP address to change? For a year I've been using the same laptop at home and at work. Today's new IP address is TOTALLY differetn form my old address.

Sorry, if you don't see your ip, you're not looking at the right place.

In the project settings, you see it on the left, and on the right you have a text box where you can add ip addresses to block.

You probbaly dont' have a fixed IP and maybe you are not recognizing it yourself.

*edit: sorry, I see you found it*

Whether you have a fixed Ip or a variable Ip depends on the ISP you are using and the level of service. Not lal ISP's can offer fixed IP's and when they do they charge a premium.

<<if you don't see your ip, you're not looking at the right place.>>

Sorry to be dense about this, but I click on the wrench icon in the upper left, then from the list of options I choose:

Edit Settings - Update project settings (including IP address to exclude).

This takes me to Project Settings. I can enter my website title and address, set the timezone, and enter addresses for IP Blocking. But still, there is no IP address in the upper left corner -- only the various icons and beneath that a list of options under the titles CONFIGURE and RECOMMEND. Is this not the correct page?

I also see there's a box to check on the page titled Blocking Cookie (under the CONFIGURE title). I have checked this box now, but I'm not sure if it will work if I have a variable IP. I appreciate knowing about that -- I had always assumed I had a fixed IP address. I probably don't.

Upper left? No, lower left - same level as where you enter the IP addresses just to the left of that place, where it explains how to do it.

The blocking cookie method is another one when blicking by IP doesn't work due to having a variable ip.

You are not noticing it because you probably think it's just part of the example.

I see for instance:

IP Blocking
You can specify your IP Address aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd or a range such as 212.14.23.* or even 212.*.*.* to be blocked. This prevents you or someone from your organisation inflating your count. Put each IP address on a new line with no spaces if you want it blocked. Or empty the box if you want to count all visits.

and aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is in fact my ip address right now.

Strangely, that box is empty for me, but SC appears to be blocking my IP anyway. Other people have tested the new sc on my blog, and it registers, but for some reason my hits don't register. Any idea? Again, I never blocked my own IP or entered anything into the box.

Ah, I see it now. I was being dense. Many thanks for your help.
