I have about 20 hits per day for the last 2 weeks from Reston Virginia.
Does anyone know who or why this is? Is that where ststcounter is based?
Thanks

Most likely an AOL user.

Or even several AOL users. That's where they usually show as from, regardless of where they really are.

I bet they are attackers or those who earn money from clicking their own web site's ad for making money.

If they're from a search engine, then you can do nothing about it. So far, I haven't found a efficient way to block attacks or invalid clicks from SE. Hope someone have experience can post it here. I'll appreciate it.

The IPS below are all AOL servers. You can never identify AOL users individually because they all come thru these servers. I set up labels for them so for example; 64.12.*.* has the label "aol". These servers seem to all be located in Reston.

64.12.117.139
64.12.116.138
64.12.117.197
64.12.116.142
64.12.117.207
64.12.116.130
64.12.116.207
64.12.116.73
64.12.116.5
64.252.185.126
205.188.117.198
205.188.116.18

I am so curious to know who visits my blog that I check my email and expand the header so I can see the sender's IP address. I record all the IP addresses of friends and family and I know pretty much who visits my blog. Except I can never identify the AOL users are. And there are some who just visit once, who've stumbled apon it thru and google search. I'm surprised at who visits my blog (some will never admit to it). And surprised at some who I thought would but never do.

Hi

Yes Reston is the data center for AOL. You will find they all come from there, no matter where the user is.

I don't bother labeling AOL visitors because you never know who it is, AOL users share these IPs.

Except I can never identify the AOL users are. And there are some who just visit once, who've stumbled apon it thru and google search. You won't ever be able to "identify" the AOL users, since the IP address is highly variable: even different requests (the page, and embedded images) can come from different IP addresses, and if you see a hit from the same IP address it's highly likely to be someone else. That's just how AOL works (and some other very large ISPs *)). The "location" is just that of an AOL proxy server handling the requests. SC can to an extent identify them as different "visits" if they accept the SC cookie, but there's really nothing you can do with the IP address, except determine that it is for an AOL user.

_____
*) I've found this also applies to mobile phone operators - someone browsing with their phone will show up with a different IP address each time they connect, at least. As long as there are only one or two visitors using that same network you can have a reasonably stab at identifying them (by a whole IP block, or even several) but as soon as there are more all bets are off.

it is really difficult now to track somebody by thier IP's as there are many hide IP tools available on net. i wonder how cyber petrolling works when anyone can change their IP's

The company used by the Department of Defense to provide internet access to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (SPAWAR) also shows up as a Virginia IP address.
