pronounced like Cool .com | CUIL .com claims to be the world's largest search engine. Got big PR from CNN today.

Funny you have to email them to be considered for inclusion if you have not yet been crawled by their Twiceler robot.

They say there are masqueraders crawling sites as Twiceler but to watch for these ip addresses:

38.99.13.121 38.99.44.101 64.1.215.166 208.36.144.6 38.99.13.122 38.99.44.102 64.1.215.162 208.36.144.7 38.99.13.123 38.99.44.103 64.1.215.163 208.36.144.8 38.99.13.124 38.99.44.104 64.1.215.164 208.36.144.9 38.99.13.125 38.99.44.105 64.1.215.165 208.36.144.10 38.99.13.126 38.99.44.106
If you find a robot named Twiceler coming from anywhere else it is a fraud robot. Read more here at the webmaster info page > http://www.cuil.com/info/webmaster_info/

emailed them for inclusion some hours earlier.

I just checked and they have 3 of my html sitemaps included. These sitemaps are an obamanation, opps! should use spell checker but thats ok. There are over 50 site maps and each one has tens of hundreds of links on the page.

I just searched using it, search cartoongraphics, two words.

First one on left, second row. that is a screenshot of a blog that I designed. Which said blog and it's parent site has nothing to do with the site, they have indexed in connection to the screenshot.

Whoops, just got this :

No results because of high load...

Due to excessive load, our servers didn't return results. Please try your search again.

DSL Guy

the CNN exposure they got today is causing a huge drive of traffic to the site.

they had a notice up earlier needing to increase ability to handle larger loads.

The screen shots they had for my pages were odd and in no way connected with my site. They were images linked to the root url which is good. One was like a newspaper unfolded. Go figure.

So much for loyalty. These are ex-employees competing directly with their past employer. Seems some case-sensitive Google search technologies these ex-employees are privy to may cause some legal problems in the future... that is if Google perceives Cuil as a dangerous competitor.

DSL Guy

Is this a kind of "Corporate Blackmail"?

I look at it like this: a bunch of disgruntled ex-Google employees get together and create a competitor for their ex-boss.

Now all they do is wait for the ex-boss to offer them money to buy them out. The ex-boss then squashes the competitor.

But the disgruntled ex-employees walk away with millions.

Just one scenario and maybe not a good one at that.

I would imagine that "IF" Google felt threatened and could prove that the ex-employees had in fact used technology illegally, Google would sue to the ends of the Earth and back. Even if there was no real proof, Google might sue anyway just to drive the competition into bankruptcy and get rid of them. Sadly, that is not supposed to be allowed, but happens just the same. Laws are made for lawyers and politics, not to help the public. Just my humble opinion, of course.

Statcounter Research Shows New Search Engine Cuil is One to Watch

Thursday, 31st July, 2008: Research by Irish company Statcounter, which provides free web site traffic statistics, shows that Cuil, the new search engine launched on Monday could be a significant rival to Google. After just one day, Cuil accounted for 1 in every 1000 searches done.

Aodhan Cullen, CEO and founder of StatCounter said, “This is phenomenal when you consider that Altavista, a search engine founded in 1995, accounted for just 6 in 10,000 searches.”

Cullen continued, “ There are over 100 search engines we monitor and Cuil was in the top ten in US, UK and Ireland. When you consider that over 90 other search engines (e.g. go, excite, alltheweb.com, lycos) combined accounted for just 1.54% of searches on Tuesday - Cuil with its 0.1% share on the market inside 24 hours is doing extremely well.”

On Tuesday Cuil accounted for 1 in 1,000 searches globally and in the US. 1 in 500 searches in the UK and 1 in every 400 searches in Ireland.*

*Note: This information is based on a sample of over 25 million page views globally.

Yeah, well, we'll see where they are with that damned clunky results page.

We're already in the index, so no worries, there.

Just waiting for the advertising to show up...

I did a search out of curiosity but won't be changing from Google to Cuil in a hurry

Ahem... Would it be COOL for CUIL to use ADSENSE?

Wouldn't this be the ultimate BULLFARKINSHIP?

Thanks for the new word Sharron.

Read on thestar.com:

On Day 1 yesterday of its attempt to dethrone Google Inc. as king of the Internet search engines, Cuil (http://www.cuil.com/) was shaping up to be a New Coke-style fiasco.
Vitriol was flying fast on tech maven Chris Brogan's IT blog. After waiting two hours for Cuil to return two results for his name, contributor Gopal Shenoy wrote: "(Cuil) is basically unusable – paint dries faster. Did they test this thing to see what the results are before they got coverage on CNN on how Google needs to be scared of them?"

Does everyone believe everything they read?

That is some valuable research. Do this same sampling in a month and see how it compares.

How about doing a similar sample? Roughly, how many people are still accessing the web using dial-up?

Thanks SCJen

Sorry CUIL...I'm not impressed. Yep!!! I was there for 1 minute and left it behind in the rear view mirror.

I searched my legal name. My LinkedIn profile comes up number one spot in CUIL. The problem is they show a snapshot next to my LinkedIn profile result of the Actor from the TV Series - Without a Trace. Click the image it goes to the LinkedIn page. There you see my image. I am much better looking.

I think he looks a little like Curious George. Enrique Murciano?

Oh gosh DSL Guy!

Cuil definitely seems to be having some problems...

Did you know that there is a lot of controversy in Ireland surrounding the name? Cuil states that "cuil" is the Irish word for knowledge... however, I have been speaking Irish since I was a child and that's not the definition of "cuil" as far as I'm aware...I could stand corrected now but as far as I know...

Irish word eolas = knowledge
cuil = corner, bad tempered - it wouldn't be a word I would use too often...

Lots of comments being made about this on Irish and Irish language forums!

That is some valuable research. Do this same sampling in a month and see how it compares.

Definitely! That's why we took the numbers early on - so we could see how it fares over time.

Not sure about this one... will check it out.

It's called publicity, and it matters less whether it's accurate than whether they get initial and persistent traffic.

Crappy site, all I can say...

its new, i know, but its just not easy to read......search engines are read top to bottom (standard), not left right...down..left...right...up down...down...left...right......is this a newspaper article or web results..

i typed in the name of a website (mine) and it did not even bring it up....a search does not get more basic than that....

anyhow....i dont like change...baa hum bug.....

do we really need another search engine......it will just mean having to build our sites to suit yet another search engine and then having to look at yet another advertising avenue........yahoo, google and then firefox....all with different tweaks for rankings...

booommm...my head just exploded.....and i have just thrown my pc out the windooo..........smmaashhhh

Good job Google was first, I don't think "cuiling" a search term or "cuil it" works as well.

So far it seems OK and if it weren't being hyped as a google killer I might be slightly more impressed. Nice looking search engine but google it aint (yet?)

Bad publicity is better than no publicity. That's just another myth propagated by PR people!

Either PR people or Actors. My mid-twenties was spent being mentored as a live stage actor by a Director from Rome, Nino Rizzi. His saying to me was to pay no attention to Reviews, a bad review is better than no review. ;-)

Hmmm, that's funny, seems they already lost their double L in favor of a single L. (i.e. it was originally CUILL :?:) I've seen this lurking around my site for some time, obviously...

Just looked up my site, I have images popping up twice, completely unrelated to my site, yet linking to the listed page. What the...???

A search engine that may be more impressive is Baidu.com I don't know how good it is because it's in Chinese!!
But, according to Alexa it has a ranking of 11 and for China is No.1
Seeing as China is the fastest growing Internet user, Baidu woukld be a good place to put your money.
