Default Upgrading of old projects to SC4

The last blog entry on this subject from Aug 2008 says you are converting all projects to SC4 -- and there won't be much of a wait.

But most of my projects remain at SC3 features.

I really want the exit links data but I don't really want to start over with new projects.

Any suggestions?

Exclamation How is the rollout going?

C'mon, I know you are busy....

But given that you appear to be quite happy to publicise things like the restricted public access stats (nice one), I don't understand why you aren't keeping users up-to-date with the SC4 rollout. I'd love to see the download and exit pages stats on my older projects: do I have to wait much longer for the rollout to be completed or am I going to be better off creating new projects? Unless you keep us informed, I can't make that decision.

What many of us have done is make a new project and use it after the old one, at the bottom of the source code.

If I did that it would be easier to just start a whole new project, forget about ever getting the old one updated and move on. What happens next time something changes in StatCounter and updates take forever. Should we then start a third project on our sites? Then a fourth?

Not to be mean or ungrateful, but it is getting old waiting for the changes to happen.

If I were you, I should not wait for the update if the new functionality is important to you. After waiting for more then a year I expect there will be no update ever!

In a conversion blog update on July 13, 2008 we were told that only one of the 40+ partitions had been converted to the new SC4 system and the others would follow when the colocating problem was solved!

I am afraid that the competition (Google Analytics) is slowly killing StatCounter if they do not enhance their webpage counter.

A couple of people on this forum asked for an explanation from Aodhan, but they got no answer. If the customer is not taken seriously, they will go elsewhere.

Personally I am still sticking with the old SC3 system for the time being, because at the moment history data is important to me. But when I change because of a lack of functionality compared to other evolving counters, I will change to another free counter like Google Analytics.

"Not to be mean or ungrateful" as well, just critical

Hey folks,

I know, I know... SC4 has been a long time coming... but it IS coming!

The thing is, we were faced with a dilemma a year or so ago... we had a new platform available and we had two options:

(1) Keep the new features completely under wraps until the full system was converted OR

(2) Set the new features loose for NEW projects ASAP... allowing new and existing members to benefit from the new features while still working on the conversion

We went with option 2 and despite some complaints, I STILL think we did the right thing! We made new features available to as many people as possible as soon as possible... if you don't agree, then I do apologise for that... but we will just have to differ.

Things got complicated then by problems with our hosting provider and a breakdown in negotiations with a new provider...

Rather than risk problems or outages we have just HAD to take our time on this... I can tell you from personal experience our techs are REALLY frustrated and CANNOT WAIT to get the whole system converted.... but it HAS taken a lot more time than was ever anticipated and I really am sorry about this.

At StatCounter, YOU, our members, are so important to us. We hate to disappoint you and do our best to provide you with the best service we can. In fact, any time a decision is made the old mantra is repeated... "what would our members want us to do...??" - that acts as the basis for all decisions made.

This conversion is a really serious one for StatCounter, a lot of "under the hood" changes are being made to allow great development flexibility in the future... in essence SC4 is the foundation for the future of StatCounter for many years to come.

I hope this clears some things up... I will try publish a blog on this in the next few days for the record...
