Default Google secure servers back in "came from"

I think it was fixed for a bit, but once again I am seeing Google secure sites in my "came from" stats instead of search engines.

Actually...

Are you seeing Google in "came from" or in "recent came from"?

"Came from" has always included all referrers (including search engines).

"Recent Came From" is non-search engines.
"Recent Keyword Activity" is search engines.

(sending you pm too)

I meant recent came from.... they were showing there and in Referring Websites under the new incoming traffic. However, now they are not showing but there are other problems. Referring Search Engines show I only have 7 visits since the 27th....

I get the feeling we're chasing our tails here and the techies are working on stuff now.

Hi Bobby,

Nope - no changes should be going out live at the moment. (we make updates offline, test then deploy those changes at set times only - nothing deployed in last couple of hours.)

Can you please keep an eye on things? Update this thread with any further odd things you spot so we can investigate.

Thank you!

PS: you're in the 5% so!

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for the extra info.

On further investigation, I have learned that for a referring link to be classed as a "search" (and therefore included in "recent keyword activity" instead of "recent came from"), two things must happen:
  1. the search must be done via a recognised search engine and
  2. there must be a query string in the URL (i.e. there must be a reference to the keyword used in the search OR a reference that it has been removed e.g. when google is used for an encrypted search)

In the examples you have provided, the referring string is "google.com" only with no mention of the query or keyword that was used. Without a query, we don't currently classify a referring URL as a search.

Despite extensive testing, we haven't been able to recreate the situation in your projects (i.e. an entry from "google.com" only without any mention of a keyword).

We'll keep an eye on this. Also if you happen to have any ideas about how these referring URLs (from google.com with no query information) are happening, please do let us know!

Let me look at the IPs, if I can find one that's one of my forum members I'll just ask them.

Well, I can give a little insight already. Every one in my logs right now is Android OS.

I'm seeing quite a few similar visitors coming from a Google domain without anything but the domain name. There are several different operating systems and browsers; not much of a pattern here.

I was able to get a similar visit by using the "I'm feeling lucky" buttom when searching from the Google Search home page, while not being signed in to Google, and not having instant results enabled. I'm not sure how to get it for https, but I think that Google may decide to enable https for other reasons than being signed in.
