Default Label IP Address: label appears on different IPs

A few days ago I labeled a certain IP on the Recent Pageload Activity page (let's call it "John's laptop").

Today I look at the Recent Pageload Activity page and I see "John's laptop" next to at least two different additional IPs (three different IPs in total).

Assuming this is not a bug, how and/or why is this happening?

Thank you.

You must have labeled other IPs with the same label previously.

Thank you for your response, but I'm almost certain that is not the case because the reason for labeling did not exist before the date I labeled the most recent entry.

I'm afraid there's no other possible explanation.

I just discovered something that may be relevant to this thread.

(I searched the KB, the SC forums, and Google and could not find an answer)

I see that the Label IP Address function has four choices of tracking levels. The top one is "this visitor".

The next choice is "the visitor's ip address; may change". I know how a visitor's IP address may change but I do not know how the top choice can track an individual visitor.

How is that done?

Is that possibly how the same label became associated with different IPs?

Sorry I don't know. I've never noticed this.

I suppose it's possible if a visitor first visits from IP address A and accepts a cookie, which you labeled, later the same visitor visits from IP address B but still has the original cookie, perhaps the system recognizing that it is the same visitor may add the second IP address to the same label. A bit of a long shot though.

I appreciate your replies. One last question.

Do you know of any place on the SC site that explains the "This visitor" choice? The only help I found for Label IP Address didn't mention it.

Looks like maybe that's from the cookie. For one of my sites where I am checking this I see a long character string like this:

42606343886C4F7C9148E1119BA526EE

I have several IPs for that (and I know they are all the same actual visitor).
