Default Shaw Cable IP Addresses

Hi there,

I just wanted to let you know that the interpretation of Shaw Cable IP addresses are incorrect. All of the Shaw Cable visitors to my site have been labelled as being located in Calgary, Alberta. In actuality, the IP addresses specifically show otherwise.

For example, xx106000347f42xxx.lb.shawcable.net is stated as being in Calgary and so is xx1060020ed41cxxx.vw.shawcable.net. However, the first one is actually located in Lethbridge,AB (lb) and the second one is located in Sunnyside, BC (vw).

Is there any way to change this?

You can view many of the Shaw serer addresses at http://www.askmarvin.ca/shawlist/shawlist.htm

This would be a great help if it can be done.

I see this a lot too since im Canadian (Shaw user) it always paints me being in Calgary in fact resolving my IP sticks me in Calgary when im not, not that I mind the Flames had a wicked run at the cup

Another one is Telus, lot of my Vancouver visitors are actually in Alberta hehe. No biggie. But it would be cool to see the map list them in Fort McMurray

Default Neighbours

Since we get a lot of visits from our neighbors (umm, neighbours) to the north, I've noticed the problem with Shaw.

But that's nothing compared to Comcast, one of the local Seattle cable providers. Their customers might be misidentified as coming from any of dozens of towns throughout the country. But the problem seems to be that companies like Shaw and Comcast don't provide enough information to identify thier customers' location. Telcos tend to add extra code to an IP address that precicely locates the customer. Many cable companies avoid that.

It is impossible to be 100% accurate all the time for the geo-location but it is very, very accurate 95% of the time. We update our database monthly to ensure the highest degree of accuracy possible.

One of the biggest problems is with AOL who use a web proxy for all the users so it is very, very difficult to accurately determine the location of AOL users.
