Default Not sure which kind of code to use...

I love StatCounter and it works great on my sites and blog.

I'm sure I will end up looking like a moron here, but I just don't know which type of code I should use on another site that isn't mine. I am an editor at BellaOnline.com, so I write articles and add them to their site. I can use HTML and have tried to use StatCounter to track the actual visitors to my articles. I've tried several combinations of the code, but for every visitor, the "Web Page" area is always blank and the "Referring Link" always says "No Referring Link."

Is this the best I can get since their site isn't even mine to begin with - or am I using the wrong kind of code?

My username: kellyty
One of the pages with the code: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art25594.asp

I'd appreciate any help on this - and if I can't fix it, that's OK, too.
Thank you!
Kelly

Well, you have apparently generated and used the HTML-only version of the Statcounter code, which explains the lack of referrer information and page url. You counter thus does not contain the javascript portion which is necessary for for extensive tracking.

I though at first maybe the site doesn't permit javascript, as is sometimes the case, but after looking at the source code, I saw some javascript.

You should regenerate the Statcounter code from Install code and do not select the html only version. In fact you should only at most check the invisible counter box if that's what you want (though you probably chose the invisible one in Configure Counter as well, so it's sort of redundant), but don't check any of the other options. Then reinsert the code into the pages (if you can edit them), or keep it for future use.

Thank you for your help!

When I added the regular code, the bottom of my article (where the code was) said this:

Code corrupted. Insert fresh copy.

(In case you check on it, I switched it back for now.)
Is there something I can do so it won't say this?
Thank you again!

Well, you may have inserted the code incorrectly, I can't tell now that it's not longer there. All I can say, try again and be careful how you insert it, don't split things across lines.

Christina,

I tried a few more times with the same results, but it doesn't seem to be tracking my visits at all with this code. (I changed the setting so it would count my visits and it did, until I changed the code from the HTML version to the regular one.)

I put it on an article that is viewed less and left it there for now. It's here: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art23520.asp

Any ideas?
Again, I really appreciate your help!
Thank you!

Oops! Here's your problem. You've inserted
tags within the first javascript. I don't really know how you got those in there.

You have to work in Notepad or code view of whatever web editor you're using, otherwise you will get extra formatting stuff in there you don't want.
Quote:

<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">

var sc_project=372870;

var sc_partition=1;

</script>

<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://www.statcounter.com/counter/counter.js"></script><noscript> </noscript>

</DIV>

What's in red shouldn't be there. The
tag has no place within a javascript (i.e. between the <script ... and </script> tags).

Also the other
tags will not cause an error, but will cause blank lines to be inserted in your page which you may not want. Their presence is probably due to the same editor problem.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
It works now!!!

I didn't actually add the
tags, but the site where I add articles automatically adds them. It didn't cross my mind that the code I copied and pasted could have been altered, but it apparently adds the
tags when there has been an "Enter." Even if I would have checked the source code, I wouldn't have known that the
tags would make a difference.

So, thank you so much for your time and for helping me!

You're welcome. Glad to hear it workd.

The
tags would be added if you're using Enter in WYSIWYG mode (or whatever method of entering information is there).
