Default who is behind the IP address

does anyone know if there Is there anyway we can find out who is sending us an email other than just by seeing the IP number or where the server is from. I have busted my tail searching and can't find any answers. I could sure use some help as I am getting harrassing email regulary. I think I know who it is by a pattern of emails and IP numbers but I need the person's name for my attorney. HELP! HELP!

You'll most likely need a court order to subpoena the ISP's records that may identify the individual. You'll have to have sufficient arguments for a judge to grant that. You will have to file a complaint with the police as it would be deemed a criminal offense.

Chances are though that this individual is hiding behind several layers of proxy servers and IP cloaking and spoofing methods, unless he/she is a rookie at this harrassment business. You'll need to convince the police of the seriousness of the situation before they will investigate. They may have access to methods that can unmask the culprint. Just don't hold your breath. If it's not a matter of national security it's doubtful the police would really bother with it.

There may be private investigators for internet and email fraud that you can hire and maybe they can find something, but it will be at your cost of course. And they may come up empty after many wild-goose chases.

You might as well change your email address and use some filters to bounce back emails based on whatever distinguishing marks those emails bear. Maybe there's a phrase that's unusual enough yet it's present in those emails.

Default Knowing an IP is not enough

Thanks for the reply. Sad thing I'm 95% sure who it is but tracking it down is almost next to none. There about 3 or 4 names I can pick out that are sending me those emails. I just need to have a name with an IP address. It's not criminal its just harrassment. I have a business and my email is posted on my website. Why should I change my address when I haven't done anything wrong and they would do it again anyway. They use Yahoo addresses. Don't tell me to report it to them Been there done that. Didn't work. These are local people and they don't like me. they are jealous of my success. Another sad thing is that the police in my town employees the brother of one of the persons that I think it is is. You know "Clicks"
Thanks anyway. If you hear of anything else that can help me please let me know.

Change your email address and implement email forms on your web site with no visible email address on them.

Anybody who wants to contact you from the web site will do it through the email form, and the old email address can eb set to autorespond and direct people to the web site email form.

This will also help cut back the amount of spam you're likely to receive.

Best I can suggest under the circumstances.

You can of course know what the ISP is from the IP address where the email originated. The trouble would be if it is cloaked through proxies. You could contact that particular ISP and give the details of the email (date, time, IP addresss) and they might voluntarily check to see whose account that may be. This is why I said you may need a court order if you feel really very strongly about it. Harrassment is still a criminal act.

Good luck, I know it must be very annoying. But you can and you should take it in stride and just ignore it otherwise.
