Default computer problems

I don't know if this is a problem with statcounter, or some other problem with my computer, but for 2 days now I have not been able to access the main statcounter site at http://www.statcounter.com. This forum loads fine, and every other web site I have tried going to works fine, it just appears that my computer/browser has a problem with loading statcounter.com specifically. When I try to load the site, it gives me a "cannot find server" error page. I have not changed my internet settings, and statcounter is not on my blocked sites list. The site loads just fine on the other computer in the house, which is hooked up to the same internet connection. Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know how to fix this?

Had this problem right with my own ISP's portal page just 5 minutes ago.

IE > Tools > Internet Settings> Delete temporary & offline files.
Close the browser and reopen it.

If it still doesn't connect, try rebooting.

Try using http://66.98.134.100 instead of www.statcounter.com - see how that goes.

You can try Start>Run >cmd
Once in the DOS window, type:

tracert www.statcounter.com

and see if anything happens and if so where it bogs down.

I have in the past also typed:
ipconfig /flushdns

and this has reset the DNS cache for me.

Hope it helps.

There are other more drastic measures, but let's hope some of this works.

Thanks for your help!

I have tried clearing my cache as well as the other options you suggested. However, none of these seemed to work. When I loaded the alternate address you suggested (http://66.98.134.100), it did partially load the page, but it was not streamlined at all and a very crude outline of the page. I have never had this problem before, and I can't think of anything that I did that was out of the ordinary.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I also just noticed that my counter does not appear on my web site when I load my website on my computer, and does not record the hits on my counter. The counter works for all other computers...

This tells me you are very definitely blocking access to the www.statcounter.com site.

Check your security and privacy settings in IE. If you use Spybot or a firewall check that too.

I have checked my settings in IE, and everything seems to be at the normal levels. I don't have any sites in my blocked sites list. I also restored my firewall settings to default. The site still does not load.

Clear all the cookies and start over.

Default settings may still be too high, especially if you're using XP with SP2.

i suspect lots of people are having this problem. I am. When i did the tracert www.statcounter.com, these are the results:

Tracing route to www.statcounter.com [127.0.0.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms and.doxdesk.com [127.0.0.1]
Trace complete.

That looks like the command never got out of the box. What is the directory and file name of the file that screens all outgoing URLs and substitutes a dummy URL for sites listed in the file? I want to check to see if the www.statcounter.com URL is in that file.

Do you mean the hosts file? Not sure of the name, but you can probably search for hosts .

However tracert is probably not using this.

I think you can try this in dos:
ipconfig /flushdns

to clear the dns cache.

Best you try first ipconfig /? first though, since I'm not comfortable with this. There are other options there.

Christina, you are correct about the HOSTS file. For my problem resolution, see my new topic: "No count & no www.statcounter.com access solution."
