Default newbie question - multiple pages

Hi

I have a statcounter on my main page veinglory.com -- if I want to also track other pages under this index do I need to enter them all as seperate projects? I want to see which pages people entering the index are most likely to go on to next. But I don't want to just copy the same counter as this wouldpresumable count each page as a seperate hit and inflate my total?

Your counter counts all the pages where you put it so the total reflects all pageviews. You get details of each page's views in your Popular pages stats , though it's only based on the log size, not as a cumulative for the lifetime of the project.
Otherwise you'lll have to make different counters for each page, but you won't see the realtionships, the visitor's progression between the pages at all .

Thanks, that's what I figured. I would love to see them all linked together but I also want a front counter that only reflects hits on the front page. I guess I will go with making key pages separate projects.

Just (I hope) to clarify: Adding multiple pages to the same project won't normally "inflate my total". You will still (usually) see a count for unique visitors and a different and much higher count for page views.

There are, indeed, some problem caused by dependence on cookies for the summary stats and a different but related set of problems caused by ISPs like AOL that shift a user's IP address during a single session.

But despite those issues, you might at least try out counts for a few days using the same project since that will give you -- as Christina said -- a clearer picture of what your users are doing on your site.

No doubt Christina or someone else more expert than I will correct me if I'm wrong, but you could have one project with a visible counter with the code just on your home page, and a second project with invisible counter with the code on all pages. That way you counter would show just visitors to your home page, but you could also track visitors progress around your website through the second project.

Just a thought ... !

Yes, this would work., as long as 2 separate projects are used. One strictly for the home page (acting as a site visit counter) and another for all the pages in order to capture the details.

However any visitor coming in through a page other than the home page will not be reflected in the home page counter until they get there - which they might not necessarily.

f1roro, thanks a lot -- that sounds like the best solution! I guess I should have been able to think of that but my brain got 'jammed' on the idea.

I definitely only want to visibly count front page hits as this is fairly standard and I think counting internal hits would be borderline 'dishonest' (to the extent the counter is to show visitors the hit rate per month). Another option would be to be able to show the 'unique visitor' count on the visible counter...

My pleasure - I'm no good at the technical stuff, but I can do lateral thinking!

As for the "borderline dishonest" bit, some might consider that to be the case if using page hits for your total, but its pretty standard practice to have a counter showing unique hits, irrespective of where they enter your site. Relatively few of my visitors arrive via, or even visit, the home page as their searches take them direct to other pages in the site - without including these hits, my counter total would be woefully low!

Cheers
