A web page containing your Statcounter code was saved to somebody's own computer and displayed again from there. Since it had the Statcounter code on it and they were connected to the internet, it naturally logged a hit.

This will also happen if you test your web page on your own pc before uploading and you didn't create a blockign cookie for yourself. I assume that the name LEE BRAUSE doesn't ring a bell, otherwise you'd not be asking.

Yep, I've seen this a bunch too-- especially with this page, the biggest "dollmaker" on my site, which gets linked to a lot from outside sites, then sometimes saved to the documents of the visitors. When I look at the popular pages, I even recognize some of their names now, will be like, "Oh, so-and-so is online!" For example, right now I have a- file:///C:/My%20Documents/flossy's/school%20spirits.htm online. (This one changed the name of the page so I don't know which one they saved, but most keep the original name)

The weirdest one now I've got, which I mentioned in another thread, is someone who has saved my "About Me" page to their documents!

The thing to watch out for is if you start seeing other web pages in your Popular Pages. I've had people steal entire pages off my site, direct-linking all the graphics and everything... and not even bother to remove the StatCounter code!

Actually, I know her and she takes ideas from my site
If I could only block her access and make it more difficult for her to steal my designs. Imagine! She downloaded my site and is poking around through it!!!

Blocking access to your site is a moot point once the page has already been saved to somebody's own pc. At that point they aren't accessing your site, but a local copy of everything including the graphics used on the page that was saved.

For the future what you will need to do is twofold:
  • 1. Deny access to your site to any IP addresses you heve already determined are up to no good. Uselss maneuvre if they use a dial-up interent conenction or they IP address is in any way not static. Even high-speed internet connections often have non-static IP addresses. In any case this step is best implemented in your hosting's control panel wheer you'd usually have a function to block IP addresses. Or through a .htaccess file placed in your root folder. The exact syntax of this file is tricky and should be handled very carefully lest you block yourself from any form of access. Also .htaccess will not work on Windows serves, other methods have to be used.

    2. Apply anti-hotlinking measures to protect your image files so they can only be accessed through pages located on your web site or other siets that you specifically list there. Again this may be a function available in your control panel, or done through the .htaccess in the root folder ,with great care. One of the extra ways you can protect your images is to deny direct access to them (like by an address to an image typed in the browser's adderss bar).
