Inktomi?

If Inktomi had crawlers, would those crawlers being using Mozilla 5.0? Would this prove to me this is an actual person and not Yahoo searching? I also get googlebots but it actually does say "crawl" in the string and no other info (screen, java disabled, etc).

My other question, if these people can turn off their javascript so it is disabled and I can't get further info, is it possible for me to do the same or are there problems if I do do this?

Not necessarily, although the primary bots used by Yahoo are identified as "slurp" and won't be visible to StatCounter. Before Yahoo bought it, Inktomi sold their search technology to other companies (and may still do so). I've never really looked into who or what that occasionally visible Inktomi Search link comes from, but if you're worried about it, you could check on who owns the IP address.

It depends on what browser you're using. I'll give two examples:
IE: (to turn off JavaScript)

Select Tools/Internet options from the menu.
Select Security Tab.
Select Internet security zone
Click Custom Level
Under "Scripting" which is near the bottom of the options screen...
Disable "Active scripting"

IE: (to turn off images)
Select Advanced tab
Unclick the option "Show pictures" under "Multimedia"

FireFox: (to turn off JavaScript)
Select Tools/Options from the menu
Select the "Web Features" pane.
Unclick "Enable JavaScript"

FireFox: (to turn off images)
Unclick "Load Images"

And, yes, most sites will have at least somewhat limited functions under either or both of these scenarios. Some might present a significantly different page.
