JWJ. I like the idea of giving the road perspective by making it smaller at one
end. Jonra, as always your great tips are appreciated. When you say detail image, may I ask how that differs from a thumbnail? Fuzzy, I created this page in Excel so that may account for a refresh needed at times in Firefox. I have a roughed-out page with the pictures laid out for a vertical road at http://wickhamstonepark.com/thepark.htm Arlen |

I just took a look at the new vertical page. You are using detail thumbnails for a couple of the images - peay and the totem. I'm just suggesting that you use this technique for all of the images.

jonra, I looked at what you did with detail images on your site and see it can
really be useful. In my case I would like to have a full picture of the statues to make it appear more realistic as viewed from the road. Since I intend to use the vertical road the picture size will not be a problem. I will also not need horizontal scrolling and it will be easy to place the logo at the top. Thanks for your input, Arlen |

I have been having a bit of a play with a few ideas. Have a look at this and see what you think. http://projects.jwjonline.net/WickhamStonePark.htm
This is a rough mock-up to show you what is in my mind (the images are hastily cropped and not all the text is there). If you like this approach then there is a fair bit still to be done to make it workable. I have made all the thumbnails 80x80 to give a uniform appearance and pasted them into the image to give absolute control over their placement. This means you can precisely replicate the locations of the statues. Each image can be linked to another page by 'image mapping' which I haven't done at this stage. The background could be darkened and/or made more natural with trees, paths etc. There are drawbacks. The size will be fixed regardless of the visitors screen resolution although scrolling is minimised. Also I'm concerned the image might be too large and therefore slow for dialup users. I've sliced the image which helps but would still appreciate feedback in that regard. (Sharron If you don't like the closeness of the images to each other then obviously their size and the overall image size and layout are all changeable. It is the concept that I wanted to share rather than a final design. |

John, that's a terrific design! I really like the uniform size of the overlapping thumbs. The roadway with perspective looks great just as you had suggested it might.
These overlapping images are embedded in a table. Can they still be hyperlinked separately? Just some first thoughts. The Austin Peay and Totem Pole statues should be swapped since the totem pole is directly behind the Peay statue. The York,WW2 and Andrew Jackson satues are clustered together so it would be nice to show a gap before after these pictures. I wonder how the page would look if the pics were scaled-up to 90x90. All in all a great design that I would like to use as the basis for this page. Thanks very much, Arlen http://wickhamstonepark.com |

Arlens, I'm glad you like the design. Before we get too involved in considering specific positions and thumbnail sizes you need to think about the method. This is different from what you have done previously - it is not a dozen-or-so different thumbnails in a table. It is, to all intents and purposes, one single image. It has been constructed by pasting the existing thumbnails into it but the end result is a single inflexible image.
Though I would be very happy to create this for you in the first instance you need to consider how you would make changes to it in the future. May I ask what graphics software you use. I use Paintshop Pro 8. I also wonder whether some of our css-guru friends here can achieve the exact same result in an easier way. I am vaguely aware of absolute positioning coordinates but I'm not sure how much control we can have and whether or not the overlap is possible. It would be interesting to get some feedback before jumping in. |

absolute positioning definitely would allow you to over lap the images but absolute positioning does not work well with different resolutions since all positioning is done in non-variable distances from the top and the left of the page. So about the only way would be to make it a static 800px wide site unless you want to scroll horizontally.

JWJ, I am looking at your page with Dreamweaver. I see there are 9 jpeg files that makeup a table. So, any text changes have to be done with software that lets you edit jpeg files. I have Photoshop so I'm sure it can handle the job. I haven't made much use of the Photoshop software so I'll
have to read-up on adding text inside images. Do you know if it is doable to have hyperlinks on the images or text inside the jpeg picture? If not, the text menu at the bottom could be used. Arlen http://wickhamstonepark.com |

halt, halt!
don't go too fast lol I can't get so involved right at this minute, but lol I want I AM THE SLICE QUEEN! Arlen you are just going to have to use css, it will work wonderfully with sliced image background. forget the thumbnails embedded, just the road way has to be sliced, even then it can in itself be a gif file. lol wait for me |
