Sorry if this has asked before, I did try to search for an answer.
How do I find the ISP address for a comment posted on my blog? I know how to find the addresses for visitors, but am unable to distinquish those that posted comments. Thanks, Dan |

You won't be able to, since the counter code is in the overall template of the blog, not specific to the comment entry section.
Could you configure your blog software to log the IP address of whomever posts comments perhaps?

Haha, what, you ***** off 'cause someone posted a nasty comment on your blog?
I suppose there's a small chance you could find out what ISP the guy (or girl) was using if you can find out what entry in your Statcounter log corresponds with his comment on your blog, by comparing the times. It could work if your blog doesn't get a lot of visitors. But if you have multiple visitors looking at your blog simultaneously it will probably be near impossible to find out who it was. First off EasySmileys.com take a chill pill, no need to be agressive.
Secondly comments are very easy to trace. Most of the comment hosts acually have a control panel allowing you to view details about each log. Thus if you can get the ip from this you can compair it with statcounter and get the IP. (or simply do a ip trace thru www.dnsstuff.com) If it was a bad comment you want to report ALL isp's have an abuse address that you can mail and report the time and ip of a user. If it is a good ISP they will judge if the act was indecent and notify/warn the user. On occasions i have had ISP's send letter to parents due to the childrens activities (lots of fun)

Heh, aggressive? Maybe you should look up the meaning of the word some time. I wouldn't say I was being aggressive. At all. Sheesh, didn't remember people here being so uptight
Perhaps you should take the pill

Thanks for your help.
FWIW: I'm not trying to ban anyone from posting comments, in fact, I welcome the sort of comment that I'm referring to here. It's a situation, I believe, involving a person who works for a particular media organization and who has issues with blogs in general and something I wrote critiquing her work in particular. I simply wanted to confirm my suspicion before formulating a response. |
