Default web hosting

Hi ! I'm sorry if the topic is irrelevant to this section. Could anyone recommend me the cheap and best web hosting service provider and domain registration? Right now i'm using a free webhost, i want to move to the paid one which could give me good service. When i change the hosting service, say the domain name also changes...so all the generated links (previously) will i lose?
Is there any solution/suggestion to prevent this.

Please help me

Thanx in advance.

Why do you want to move to a paid one?

When I moved from a free to paid hosting I put some code in the index page of my free site to redirect the user to my paid hosting site.

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0; URL=http://www.yourjigsaw.org.uk">

it worked for me.

I know of some statforumers who are in UK and are web-hosted by a Canada-based provider. Our moderator, Christina has this service. Why don't you go to her site and look at the services provided.

A suggestion.

Hi Markov,

In the UK, I use Hosting Unlimited at http://www.hosting-unlimited.net/index.php. I've been using them on personal sites for a couple of years and found them very good, with a useful support forum as well. They do domain registration as well as hosting and re-seller accounts. I use http://www.highlandhost.net/ for the commercial site, it's run by a friend so the service is great .

If your current domain name is provided by your free hosting service, rather than one you've registered yourself, you probably would have to change it. If it's one you've registered for yourself, you should be able to keep it and just transfer it to your new hosting provider.

We have been with 1and1 hosting for over a year now and have had no problems at all.

When we first signed up we were given 6months free hosting and now we pay about £4 per month for their basic hosting package.

the package includes 350 email accounts, 15GB monthly traffic, 1GB webspace and you can run php scripts etc.
We also bought our domain names from 1and1 - I think they cost $2 per year each (minimum 2 year contract).

This company is one of few organisations on the internet that we have never had a problem with! And we would definitely recommend them.

You will notice we have a referal link to 1and1 on our site (so we do make money for referals) but we really do rate their service.

I have used 1and1, and they are very good. Good support and I have no complaints at all.

Don't listen to that. Try calling their customer service raysor. ONE HOUR WAITING. Seriously I recorded it. Took one hour to get an indian accented customer service rep that i couldn't understand.

Then to top it off they have major scripting restrictions so if you try and major CMS, or the reason I finally left (though I still use them to buy certain domains), want to use a mod_rewrite script, you'll have a hard time.

I currently use Hostgator. Quick and good customer service, great webhosting (no restrictions really), cheap they have a $6.99 plan, but also a $9.99 with NO contract.

Good luck pal. Stay AWAY from 1&1. It's cheap but bad service with mucho restrictions on the webhosting.

Hi markov,
if you live in india and want to pay using indian currency,
you may seach for phrases like "india linux web hosting"
linux hosting is good.
compare the plans of various hosting services and choose some one.
but most of them may not give proper uptime as they promise.
hosting is a longterm investment. so do it carefully.

I've only ever had one problem with 1&1 and that was sorted in a day and related to some confusion as I have accounts in the UK and France and my French is poor.

I've read about issue when payment is late, in tat they suspend your entire account and not just the package with the issue which is just plain wrong and illegal I believe so I uderstand people not liking them but like I said they've been OK with me.

All that said Christina has helped me out here before so I may well look to her next time I need something.
