StatCounter: I read your privacy policy - it clearly states that IP addresses are kept to give us stats, as well as yourselfs stats; IP addresses are never shared unless both parties know about it.
How secure is this? And, have any other users had any issues with security issues with StatCounter? Regards -mray |

I'll not speak for Statcounter, but as far as IP addresses go, their are plenty of programs that can pickup an IP from a web page. It's no secret that a visitor's IP is available to anybody who wishes to get this information from their pages. Users of Statcounter or any other stats software, or any server stats, collect IP's. What they do with that information is up to them. Like any stats program, Statcounter will record the IP of their visitors, if possible. Having the IP of your visitors is useful for reviewing browsing habits and add some additional "uniqueness" to manage a website and control access in some cases. On my site I have had to ban certain IP's from accessing it to stop spammers & scammers. That's the reality of the internet.
An IP does not reveal the person; really only the ISP to whom that IP is for. Only the ISP knows "who's" IP it is. And they require a court order to reveal who is using that IP. Statcounter can comment on "How secure it is" I've not heard of any concerns regarding security issues. Last edited by Car Guy; 05-29-2008 at 07:19 PM. |
