Default Is internet speed modem related?

This is the fastest I have seen yet. A couple days ago, I got this email notice from Charter they want to upgrade my modem that I've been using for about 5 years now. Same modem that originally came with the cable subscription, Terayon tj715x.

I am wondering if I do the upgrade on the modem, it may or may not be an upgrade. Will I still get these speeds or could the new modem reduce them?

Modems can indeed be capped.

so unless this modem Terayon I'm using completely dies, I should just not upgrade right? Refusing to upgrade just yet, I might retain twice the speed I am subscribed for .

what do you think?

The ISP can cap the speed as well I believe, regardless of the modem's capabilities, if they want to.

yes i am sure you are right about that by using filters or whatever they use. I am at the end of a node in the neighborhood I live in, the last house. I don't know if that matters. heck, what kind of a dsl guy am I if I don't know this?

I always thought a modem was to MODulate an analogue carrier signal to encode digital information and to DEModulate to decode same on the way in.
